Received an offer as Engagement Director from Salesforce (CSG, pre sales, L9). Great benefits package, 40% increase in total comp and better WLB.
I do love the people in my practice and current client, but career trajectory has stalled after taking parental leave earlier this year and (yet another) change in leadership.
Realistically, making to Director is 2-3 years away and will require sacrificing time with my family that I am not prepared to give up.
Should I stay or should I go?

Smaller firm, work your ass off, then lateral up
I’m in IP. I think about the same. Your first year you’re really just learning the ropes. Second year you’re able to float a bit more and anticipate needs on a case and start making recommendations. Obviously, I’m not sure what your background is. If you’ve worked in law before prior to going to law school, your first two years may look a lot different. Another thing to note is that you really don’t want to be a floater. 2-3 years at one location fresh out is a good amount of time. Plus, it will give you time to also learn the market and figure out where you’d want to lateral
Network! And apply constantly. If they’re in dire need of an Atty they go to the resumes they already have on file and they may less ‘picky’ if they need the manpower. ( although I don’t know why you’d want the biglaw life I’m there now and I’m looking for a good way out. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side)
My daddy.
Graduated tier 3, currently working big law. Law review/moot court is a must, and try to graduate top 5 in the class. Also, can’t emphasize this enough, hustle your first semester of 2L. OCIs didn’t work out for me but I sent applications to over 50 firms on my own and eventually got into a top 20 firm. It’s doable, just know you’re gonna have to put in effort.
Not impossible in Chicago. Most of my classmates are from regional schools rather than UofC. However, we were all top 15 in our classes.
Networking is almost all that matters. Meet people, don’t be an asshole, follow up with them, and maybe 1 out of 10 of those relationships will pan out. Establishing yourself as a subject matter expert early on also helps. Was extremely proficient in a niche area of law within 2 years of practice and got brought on to sure up the firm’s practice group in that area.
What area of law..? 🧐
Go to a mid-market firm. Like a firm with 25-150 lawyers, and then after your second year, start trying to lateral. It’s pretty easy to do depending on your practice area.
You can probably move after the 9 months
Need more info - are you in school or have you been practicing for a few years?
I did it. T2 school, mid-V100 firm. Had decent grades (top 20-25%) but also the work experience. Got in through a connection of my 2L/3L internship boss while studying for the bar. Essentially a lot of work, little bit of luck.
What tier is your school and are you in a big legal market? That info matters.
I did it. T2 and middle of the pack. I specialized early. I knew I wanted to do corporate so I took every corporate related class I could take. Banking regulation, seg reg, m&a, venture capital, etc. I worked my ass off. Got on journal and wrote a comment on something business related. Was one 3 different e-boards and interned every single semester after 1L (6 total + clinic). I also networked by cold emailed alumni and setting up calls. Now I’m a 1st year doing capital markets work. You CAN do it.
