I have a couple of questions for ZS fishes-
1. Is it possible to turn down a promotion at ZS? I'm currently happy with my responsibilities as a Decision Analytics Consultant and don't want any added responsibilities in the near future (next 5 years)
2. Is it possible to shape up a career path in the BC stream which doesn't involve business development? I don't want to get into working on SOWs and RFPs.

Do whatever, but don't patronize, like, "no worries I'm sure you are definitely getting promoted next year", or, "it's all firm politics I tell you, I know you are great at what you do, and you deserved a promotion this time". Ideally I would never bring it up in a conversation. If your friend does bring it up, just agree with whatever he/she says. No need to provide your opinion on it.
Help him / her get promoted this year
Don't stop being close. If you are friends level should not matter. One of my closest people at work is Senior and I am SM.
Don't need to be cagey about mentioning it..dont be condescending but if you spoke about it earlier your sudden silence will be more noticeable and come across as showing pity..talk about it..try to reason what went wrong and help them get it next year.
Most importantly don't be fake..people notice..never be fake.
Treat as her equal rank going forward
Thanks everyone for all the dos and don'ts so far 😊
Don't diminish your accomplishment -- be proud of what you've done and help them achieve it next year.
Tough situation! My sympathies
EY2, brilliant reply.
Embrace it but don't flaunt it - it's you're achievement and you don't need to appear patronizing
