Not sure so much about a full traumatic past, but for a traumatic event, highly recommend therapy and couples counseling (if you’re in a relationship). My wife and I had a stillborn and we wouldn’t have recovered as quickly as we did without it. The grieving took a good year (and still dealing with at times), but we are so grateful to have talked through everything.
First - it's hard to deal with trauma so sending encouragement to you. I agree about counseling. EY assist has a number to call and can help you find right type of therapist. I am glad you are asking for help. To Siegfried 1 - so sorry for your loss.
I don’t know you ever “get over” trauma, but therapy can help process it.
EMDR helped me, but there are a bunch of different therapy modalities that can be useful depending on your situation!
It take courage to recognize and to ask. I commend you.
The answer is it depends on your unique needs. Considerations that impact your healing include the severity and type of trauma.
There was a lot of addiction in my family so Adult Children of Alcoholics helped me. What helped the most was legal and safe psychedelic assisted therapy. I’ve also done traditional therapy, EMDR, and professional coaching (which is like cognitive behavioral therapy) but none of those modalities allowed me to unlock the trauma that was stored in my body nor get to the stuff my psyche had built a fortress around.
I love the work of Gabor Mate and the book the Body Keeps the Score.
