How's the energy lateral market for associates atm? Particularly for senior associates.

Question. I started my own firm and am getting some contract work. The client technically hired me to do the work however some of it I could hand off to my associates. There are no billing differences as it's already a discounted rate. Is it wrong for my associates to do the work and to just bill the client without saying associate 1 did this associate 2 did that?

First year: how long without a full ramp up before I should worry? I’m sub-250 hours since I started (3.5 months) and the firm/group are both busy. Other first years in my group are mixed. I’m a non-TX immigration attorney mentoring a UT student who went to my undergrad. He’s done incredibly well in OCI and pre-OCI. Thus far, he’s landed interviews with (all in Houston): Baker Botts, Sidley Austin, Kirkland, Winston Strawn, Reed Smith, Norton Rose, and Locke Lord. Also Perkins Coie in Dallas. He’s leaning transactional, but also open to litigation. Any insights/advice on these firms in the TX market? Any to avoid?

Debt Finance nyc biglaw attorney considering a move to Houston for financial reasons. Can anyone tell what it would be like (the good and bad)? I see a lot of firms including mine paying the same salary and wonder what would I not like?

Do most firms start reporting years in September or January? Prior firm did an August year for counting hours and then another did January (both Amlaw 200). Looking at an Amlaw 100 to lateral in the fall (so trying to anticipate how much of the year I’ll have). I’ll ask what bonus/reporting year but just curious if most follow the same.
