Let’s put it this way. In forensics, once you have your foot in the door, you will never be rejected for not having your CFE. But having your CFE will help you get your foot in the door in the first place.
Most people I know in forensics have their CPA or CFA. They only get their CFE later on in order to help sell work because it’s another “check the box” some clients like to see.
CFE is minimum credential for forensic specialty. Its not a difficult hurdle. Less than 80 hrs to prepare and pass the test. Just do it
i’ve been in forensics for two years, and i know a good amount of people have one. def not required, but some people that aren’t cpa track get it or those who already have a cpa get it just so they can have another certification under their belt. happy to refer you!
Definitely an exam/credential worth having! It’s 4 exams, but easier ones than the CPA.
I (along with at least half the members of my teams, if not more) have our CPA but not CFE. I have never heard of anyone ever being at a disadvantage for not having their CFE when they already have their CPA. Of course it doesn’t hurt to have another certification but don’t feel like you HAVE to go out of your way to get it.
Given that, another perspective is that taking steps to get your CFE now could signal that you’re serious about forensics and transferring. But if you already have an in on the team then I would defer to what I said above.
Never heard of the following: a client didn’t hire a firm because of too few CFEs on the team, HR screening/hiring manager rejecting an applicant because of not having the CFE credential, or someone claiming they learned so much from taking the CFE exam (studying the materials, yes).
If you want to get it, do it. It’s not essential, though.
Thank you everyone! Very helpful and appreciate your responses.
