The awards were window dressing. The real currency was the lineage — the agencies built by misfits and geniuses who taught generations and shaped culture. Holding companies are vaporizing everything this industry once stood for.
To me it’s all just a good reminder to care about something in your life more than work: family, friends, faith, whatever it is for you.
So well said
For note. DDB was Omnicom, not IPG. Ironically, Omnicom was formed by a merger of DDB, BBDO and Needham.
My first job was at DDB Needham, which was 10 years after the merger and the psychic pain of that event could still be felt. Very sad about this terrible news.

The problem is, the campaign they’re flexing is completely unknown to anyone who didn’t closely follow advertising awards.
For what it’s worth, I’ve been with both FCB and BBDO and felt BBDO was a much stronger network in terms of gravitas and vision. It was a very motivational culture of excellence. FCB NY was an utter mess of cruel and chaotic personalities when I was there. Chicago seemed to be much better.
Publicis - I was always impressed when we connected with the Chicago office. The NY office was a nightmare. And a lot of the network leads were based there, who if you saw in action, were often horrible ppl. Saw one throw a temper tantrum in front of clients - so embarrassing. It was pretty bad outside of Chicago, which is a shame, bc it seemed like Chicago was the real flagship.
I honestly have no idea what that dreamcaster campaign was
If you would have said that you’ve never seen it, it would have been really funny.
Winning awards doesn’t matter. It doesn’t save your job during a layoff, and it doesn’t save your agency if you’re highly awarded during an acquisition. This is a business and it’s about Billings and money. The agencies and the people who bring the most money stay.
Next year, the festival might as well just be called Omnicannes.
This is such a fucked up part of the creative side of the business.
Awards get you hired by CCOs. But once you are hired, clients and agencies only care if you keep the client happy and the bottom line positive, which often comes from just doing a slightly better version of what the clients want. Which puts you in poor standing with your CCO but good standing with your CFO.
Fighting to do great work gets you in trouble with clients which gets you in trouble with the CFO. Doing work that makes your clients and CFO happy gets you in trouble with your CCO.
Having a long career is all about trying to ride that balance for as long as you can until you find yourself bounced out of the good shops and into Pharma.
Where you are eventually bounced out in a merger because you are over 40 and cost more.
All of this is true.
I think at least part of the shift happened when awards stopped celebrating teams and started serving as personal currency. Everyone chased Bogusky-level fame. Trophies became résumés, bad behavior hall passes, and ego fuel. Everyone turned narcissistic because the system rewarded it.
Eventually, our own exposure mattered more than our clients’ work—and they noticed long before we did. While we fixated on our reflections, many of our smaller clients with big potential quietly moved on.

All the ad history classes I once took 🥺
Alma mater? Really?
Pro
Yeah - why not? I started there after college and I consider myself an alum. I even belong to the FCB alumni club on LinkedIn. 🥰
I feel the same way about y&r no longer existing

All the people from FCB who won these awards are getting top jobs in the new Omnicom. McCann will be run by FCB people. Many BBDO agencies as well. They mattered a lot actually. Admittedly, it's not just because of the awards, also because the business results from FCB were much better than other networks.
Only reason FCB is getting dissolved is because they don't have a real presence outside of North America
Awards are great, but they’re not everything. What matters is being able to make a living and keep producing strong work. In the end, you’re only as good as your last piece.

Thanks, I hate it
We wish them well.
Who is Leo Burnett?
Didn’t every single person at FCB and DDB know this was coming for the past year or so? In spring people at FCB were being encouraged to resign with some DOGE-like severance incentive (resign now and get severance, don’t and we can’t promise you won’t get fired later w/minimal severance). How is everyone so shocked?
