I am the only female executive at my job. I was super stressed going into a call to review a deck. The guy didn’t have it ready and his boss, my peer, started blaming me/my team. After trying to resolve, fed up I said I’m not having this conversation and exited zoom. Next, my peer emails it was inappropriate to exit etc. The following day, my boss emails me to tell me both guys told on me and I need to apologize. When I defended myself I was still told “we don’t do that here”. Thoughts?

I’d counter point and say that X, Y, Z did not come prepared for the meeting and after staying on the call, you left so they could get organized and you could tend to another task. Your time is important and they were not valuing your time.

Suck it up and apologise. You can explain why you did what you did, but I have never come across someone stropping off on a call. It's the equivalent of storming out of a meeting. Just not done in the professional world.

I’ve never stormed off, but I’ve seen ppl on calls do so. One where I thought it was justified, one I thought was in poor taste. The justified one was a woman who was mansplained and after it happening a handful of times on the call, she said “respectfully, my points aren’t being acknowledged but it appears as though X has similar thoughts” and she said she had to drop but wanted to hear how it turned out after. In your situation, that sucks to feel like you were told on. You should address it now that it’s been called out. Is it worth it to defend in the grand scheme of things? Curious why they blamed you?

Thanks all. The call was about selling one of our UK originated solutions. My team (sales) isn’t selling it because it’s not a good fit for the US market. I tried to explain the reasons/market differences and was spoken over with my reasonings disregarded. I suggested solutions and next steps to steer the conversation and felt they weren’t interested resolution, just finger pointing. My peer, the COO was belligerent. I could tell he brought a pissy mood to the call.

I totally hear the arguments on grace and composure, but at what point do we get to stop putting up with the mansplaining and bullying?

Should I have sat there and let them blame me and my team?

I understand how you feel. However, if you’re the executive, you have to lead with grace, no matter the situation. Why did they blame your team?

Secondly, when my team members see me in cafeteria we expect they'll sit with us but people here are being rude they directly go and sit with their friends they don't call you to join. ( atleast they could have said they are accompanied)

Hi all—trying to understand a little bit more here. Someone recently suggested everyone on my team add pronouns to their display name. I argued against making it mandatory since it forces people to either lie or come out. But I’m also wondering from the standpoint of someone who isn’t cis, what’s the right approach here?
