I asked for part time and they gave it to me starting next year. I told them that I needed to take classes to be eligible to sit for the CPA exam. In actuality I’m taking programming and data analytics classes at a CC to leave tax and embark on a new career. I’m very scared I cut my hours during this time of economic uncertainty. Mad at myself I’ve wasted my time and pigeonholed myself in tax. I figure if I don’t do it now, I’ll never be happy or fulfilled. Conflicting emotions. Why?

Maybe you realize that lying undermines your reputation?

Lol this. EY2 apparently thinks he owes EY something called loyalty and hasn’t yet realized the firm doesn’t share the same sentiment

Going through a similar thing OP! I regretted that I did not think to change path sooner but... what is the point to feel regret at this point. I am trying to adjust my thinking so that it’ll help me push through the transition instead of wasting time in my bad thoughts. I joined some social network communities on fb and discord to help me get the career/emotional support I need from a non-tax perspective. Find a mentor from those groups to keep you on track from time to time in your journey. I was surprise to see how willing people are to help me so I am sure they will for you too! Part of the journey is having to face these tough decisions and the unknown. No change will be easy. I wish you all the best OP! We got this!

Thank you! It helps to know I’m not the only one going through this.

Good for you!! I have two friends that are Software Programmers with Computer Science Bachelors degrees. I have a Masters in Tax and my CPA. They also have been working less years than me are are making over double my salary. I frequently think that I chose the wrong degree/career from a financial perspective. They sometimes work overtime, but no where near as much as Tax busy seasons. I try to rationalize my lack of salary because I left public, went to industry, and now I’m in government because of the great benefits (insurance, 401k) and work life balance (decent hours plus lots of PTO). All in all I’m saying if you think you want to change, go for it, it sounds like a great idea and will likely pay off soon. Hopefully working part time will give you enough money and enough time to focus on school. Do what is best for your career and life. Don’t worry about the firm. When I was in public my manager told me that it’s a business and they will always do what is best for them, and that I should do what is best for me.

Thank you for your insight. 😁 Another reason why I want to switch careers is because work life balance is important to me. Life is too short to be miserable and the clock keeps ticking...

I am in the same boat. I am taking data classes at CC while working fulltime. My goal is to work in tax/technology. I would predict that data people will take over accounting and tax field very soon. It is already happening. Good luck to you and all tax data geeks!

I am taking data management class (SQL). I have a friend who is a data engineer (specialized in SQL). She took all her classes at CC. You should try different things, and hope you will find the best path for your career.

I’m on an engagement with another associate. I’m fully booked (upwards of 60 hours a week every week of July), while the other associate hasn’t had billable hours for the last 3 months... engagement team has some changes they need to get pushed through to the wps, and I’m the better choice to push those updates (have more experience in wps and just better in general). But the other associate has availability and just gets paid to do nothing. Should I bring that up to someone? How and to whom?

Hear me out. We’re living in the residual days of advertising power. Back in the day, if you worked in advertising, you very much shaped culture. Advertising creatives shared the airwaves with only the likes of Hollywood and national news. There were only so many pipes into culture and advertising was a big one. But today, the pipes are democratized. Random teens on TikTok are having more impact on culture than Mad Ave. And yet, so much ego and self importance remains.
