It sucks and they had every right to do it. At will employment.

...within their first three months of working at the new firm and half to be received at the end of their first year pending we both still work there on their 1 year anniversary. They laid my associate off a couple weeks after me. They did pay two weeks severance but is this worth fighting? I mean that’s $2,500. And we both got laid off cuz we’re new and work was disappearing off the schedule left and right. Neither one of us really got a chance to work with managers or even teams on most of our engagements. I get we were likely to be cut once all the covid crap started happening because we were new and barely integrated into the firm yet so I didn’t expect much loyalty over longer affiliated associates - I bear no grudge about that, but c’mon? They hired us both on the spot in the interview process, we both accepted and started working within 10 days of the offer, and both busted out butts to hit the ground running this busy season with no feedback or reviews or mentorship/coaching. We were good candidates. They had to know they were letting me go to avoid paying that right? Am
I crazy or being greedy for wanting a piece of that? If I am I’ll let it go, if not that’s a bunch of bullshit. Everybody can stand to take every dollar they can get rn. On top of them owing me a fat expense check for open expenses.

I’ll have to look. I do have a copy.
Try to email hr. If you're friends with a manager or partner you know loved the new hire and layoff wasn't performance related, cc them. Be polite and not super pushy, just say you wanted to know if providing this was a possibility as the current circumstances which led to layoffs were unforseen and you all (you, employee, employer) made good faith efforts to hire this person, who got good reviews and did good work on the engagements they were on.
we aren’t lawyers.. not sure what kind of a response you are expecting.

Thanks everyone for the honest feedback. Not trying to put up a big hassle about it.
I think you can ask for the $.
Also consultation is typically free with the lawyers.. it's worth a shot to call one up
