HR doesn’t need to know how you know. It doesn’t hurt to ask.
It can definitely feel unfair when people in the same role are paid differently, especially when education or certifications don’t explain the gap. Sometimes it comes down to things like experience, negotiation, or timing—but it’s still valid to question and advocate for equitable pay. Even though being "cross-trained" is good, but don't mean higher pay. I would first have a conversation with your manager and ask him or her how can increase my pay . Of course, have HR explain how you can. Remember, HR is for the organization or company not the employee.
I’m also assuming he has less tenure, as well?
I was paid less than my male coworker who had the same job description, no previous experience in the field to my 2 years, and hired 1 year after me. I don’t really hold it against the company. He must have negotiated higher on hire than me, and I guess they don’t feel morally compelled to make things fair if they don’t have to. I could also have been somewhat due to inflation in that one year difference. And similarmy, companies do not feel morally compelled to adjust salaries for inflation if they aren’t otherwise compelled to.
I wouldn't be too concerned about how you would be perceived and focus on yourself and your valid frustration and irritation. Think it through. Write down a "script" and review it several times so that you're comfortable and confident with what you're about to say when you meet, and then set up the meeting. Good luck!
