Just pay to pick your seat?
How much do you travel? Paying for comfort seats isn’t that bad and may be less than whatever backdoor option you’re looking into.
I’m about 20-25 flights a year, which are booked in advance enough that my PQP is terrible. I realize I am at the sweet spot of where I travel enough but not enough. I did the math on the comforts and it adds up where the subscription is cheaper.
what is this subscription you’re talking about?
Economy plus subscription on United 599 to be able to get those seats
Considering getting the economy plus subscription which is 599, but I’m not sure if that’s the best way to go. Also not sure if Amex plat travel credit hits that.
mattress runs
i mean mileage runs to get airline status since u still travel quite a bit. U can skip the mattress part if purely optimizing but some folks like to combine it with hotels so add the mattress part. Otherwise it’s just day-trip mileage run which can be fun too but not as much as mattress run

1- get an Aa credit card and spend enough to get gold or platinum (40k or 75k I think). Through online shopping, flying and credit card spend you have a lot of options.
2- get British airways silver status if you fly AA. You get main cabin extra for free plus admirals club access. Only downside is you have to fly American :)
In theory you could get it with a handful of domestic economy flights plus a transcontinental RT flight with connections (this alone would get you about 60-70% there). The added bonus with Ba is that they do a soft landing. So if you got the top tier - gold. You could have silver the next year, and bronze after. And you wouldn’t have to fly a mile or certain amount to get a soft landing each year.
3- like others said, Marriott titanium for silver status or get an economy plus subscription.
I just buy Biz or economy plus
