Hey! Any Google folks know if it’s possible to negotiate fully remote if a contract role is hybrid? Personally, I don’t want to relocate and go to the office on a contract role given the current economy. Plus, I’m assuming contractors are the first to go in layoffs. I just think it’s a fair trade off if I’d be allowed to work fully remote. I’m also trying to have flexibility to manage my Airbnb business in a different country. Same time zone as the home office if I’d travel weeks at a time.

I would take up to 15% to stay home. I value the flexibility, I have a nanny so I can spend lunch playing with my kids and save all that time commuting so I can get extra sleep. Also hate office politics and being able to focus on tasks is invaluable. I guess I don’t really care to move up at the moment.
I'm baffled that some people can't see the value of working from home. It is absolutely the best thing that has happened in moderm day workforce to help families and kids fare better and for people to take care of themselves, mentally and physically.
If you love the office so much, go to the office but don't impose it on others.
It's not about having too much money. It's more about what people value more. Someone moved to a smaller apartment to be able to get by but retain a wfh environment
Agreed! The RTO mandate is ridiculous! Aside from god awful traffic, especially in DC MD and VA, families need flexibility. Period!
I’m far more productive when I’m WFH exclusively. My employer recently mandated RTO and it’s wildly unpopular. I don’t have a hellish commute, but now I’m home a lot less and it’s becoming a drag on my mental health and my family. Plus I’m so busy that most nights I need to log in for a couple hours anyway. Currently looking for a new career with a better WLB.
This is insane. There are tons of company that are 100% remote and don’t even have a brick and mortar storefront and have been in business 10+ years. I just got hired by one and I’m actually making more money now than I did at my last place which was 70% virtual so I don’t think it’s going away. It may go away for those companies that are in debt deeply on physical buildings that they need to feel They have to have bodies in them since they can’t get out of their rent agreements. Otherwise keep pushing and don’t settle till you find what you want even though the job market was shit and I was unemployed for seven months when I got laid off I just landed a job like I said it more money than the last job that laid me off and this company is now 100% remote. Good luck all.
Please share the name of your new employer.
Thanks!
I hate being in traffic and a pay cut of 5% would not bother me. I don’t have to go out for lunch because I eat at home.
I would definitely take a pay cut to WFH
Remote work allows me to complete my job in roughly half the time I used to go to office. I look at it all as $$ per hour and remote is always more money per hour. The other hours allows me to make $$$$ in other ways.
I have been remote for 6-7 years. I could probably make more money per hour working in person. I don’t think it would be worth the wear and tear on my car, or the cost of gas. Also, I save money on food as I’m able to eat all my meals at home. Illness is not as big of an issue either. I can live anywhere in the 50 United States without switching jobs.
I would take the pay cut because when I don't commute, I don't spend as much on gasoline, eating lunch out, buying clothes for the office, etc. Also I prefer to have more hours of the day for something more productive than driving, I can better concentrate when I don't have meetings, and I can manage my diet a lot better. It's worth it to me. I would be bummed by a pay cut that is more than what I am saving by WFH though.
Very interesting to say the least.
In my observations, individuals who want to work from home could have a wide range of reasons to do so.
My GF spends 3 hours of commuting by bus each day, on top of her 9:30 to 6:30 shift. The convenience of working @ home can't be overlooked
If you have experienced taking a train or bus for 3-4 hours back and forth, standing all the way, compressed in your cart like a sardine, 5 days a week, depart from home at 5AM, arrive at home at 11 PM, you will want to take that many cuts. Trust me.
I probably would. But 40% is a huge number. I’d probably try to look for a new wfh job as time goes.
I personally do not like working from home full time. I have tried it and saw a lot of negatives, but I’m still hungry and being in person also allows me to learn from the leaders, build the relationships easier, and to me they tend to put less hour expectations on you if your in office than remote. I can separate from work easier as even though I have my computer with me even when ideas come to me I do not log on when I am home with working in office as opposed to remote. Lastly presenting to leadership tends to be in person with CFO, CEO and other leaders so if they show up I can as well.
Though I also just a 6% raise for a short 5 minute commute to the new job so it’s a net gain after all experiences. Plus they offer things like free lunches and such to cut other costs as well.
In the end it’s what’s more important
I wouldn't take a pay cut to WFH as I am already under paid by quite a bit. But I would give up my next standard bi-annual raise to WFH full time, in a heart beat!
I would take a 5-10% pay cut. Factoring in the cost of gasoline saved, wear and tear on my car saved (along with fewer oil changes), commute time that I would get back, not being exhausted and grumpy from traffic, being able to do some things at home during my lunch break, and being able to finally get a dog if I worked from home - I'd take a small cut in a heartbeat! Also, I'd be able to focus on work better since I wouldn't constantly be interrupted by coworkers or people stopping by unannounced. And I would just have more energy to get the work done since I didn't have a commute to get there and home. Instead of commuting, I could get my workout done in the morning, take a shower, and go straight to my computer. I'd be a much happier person!
If it allowed me the flexibility to have a second job full time job possibly, if it were paying enough after the cut for me to live my life and support my family comfortably then yes but otherwise no. Although it would be nice to be within 10-15 minutes of home that would almost be the same thing as work from home for me.
This is about being fired. I’m new to this line. I was fired because I was not a good cultural fit for the company. I was there 7 1/2 years never missed a day never called in sick but cultural fit means. No Hablo Español.
