I guess now might be the best time to look for lateral opportunities given the number of recruiter emails I’m getting but I can’t start at a new firm until later this fall (sept/oct) due to personal circumstances. I’m switching markets and trying to relocate. When should I start looking?

I would start a conversation with a recruiter in that market now to get their insights on timing and also to set your expectations on everything. With that timeline, I would start applying in July, with the caveat that things really slow down over the summer and pick back up after Labor Day, so you may be better off waiting if you want to maximize your options.

If you have any connections at firms you’re interested in the geographical area, start reaching out now. You can possibly get ahead of openings that way. If not, find a recruiter that specializes in the area.

First year here in a quiet patch (following a very busy period). There have been a few days where I bill 0 hours, which I’m told isn’t worth worrying about in this quiet time. But how do you spend your time on days when you bill nothing? This is a major stress for me. Cheers!

Was interviewing with a firm and soon after receiving an offer, learned of bad culture/toxic partners in the practice group from a couple of associates who recently lateraled from the firm. I turned the offer down. A partner that I clicked with while interviewing reached out asking me why I turned down the offer. Should I be honest and relay what I heard?

I’ve been at a job for a few months and hate it - partners set unrealistic deadlines, micromanage, and create work that truly is not necessary/push urgency when there is no real urgency. I had other offers prior to accepting this job that may still be options, and going back to my old job (for a pay cut) might also be an option. I can’t tell if this is just burnout, growing pains, or just an untenable work environment. Would you ride it out for a year at new job or pursue other options? HELP!

How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority).
