I hate working in the big 4 as a JD/LLM. Don't get me wrong there is interesting work to be done here but the problem is I never get any of it. I get put on all the shit excel project work that has nothing to do with anything. I've been here for a year and have gotten very little marketable experience. Went to a good law school and had decent grades just never applied to biglaw because I had no debt and now i'm regretting it. What moves can I make?

Same boat, I just bailed at a year. IRS if you could swing with it? State AG Tax groups, DoRs are full of ex-Big 4 attorneys and they’re not very picky. Your mileage may vary but there are mid-sized regional firms who respect Big 4 experience.

What group are you in at your big4?

Also what is the excel work that you are actually doing? Model work is key for pretty much bay high end planning/structure.

like

ECEB. I don't know how to describe the excel work i'm doing. But it has nothing to do with tax or anything. More like data entry bs.

In order, apply to 1) biglaw (through contacts) 2) big 4 national office 3) IRS national office in international, corporate or pass throughs 4) in house 5) another big 4 regional office but as a more experienced candidate

Over a year but the work they give me is mostly bs. So its hard to sell my tax experience. I literally get staffed on excel data entry bs.

So are you just doing compliance?

I was in the same boat, too much admin. I lateraled to a law firm and got much better work. Drafting agreements, memos, reaearch, think through the code etc. all the admin work at big4 I used to do is done by secretary now. I would just apply any law firm jobs out there. Do you have LLM? If not go get one at NYU will get you out of there. Good luck and feel free to dm me to discuss.

Child care when traveling for work should be expensable… also dog boarding… I cannot get over how things like first class seats and any meals for higher ups, dry cleaning, ubers/lyfts over cheaper options, etc. all are expensable but essential costs you need to foot when traveling like child care and dog boarding are not expensable. I wish we had a per diem like allotment rather than actual costs so we could use money left over if we choose cheaper options so we could use the money we save

I'm the 1st in-house counsel at a tech company (200+). Starting to worry about the way they want me to practice law, but don't know if I'm overreacting. I have a very high-risk tolerance, as I've done mostly PR crises, data breaches, etc.

However, the volume of work and the way they are responding are starting to concern me ethics wise. Yesterday I was given a 200 page contract to review for GDPR. I asked for 3 day turnaround, normally I get at least 24 hours. I have no legal support.
