I have a middle aged male employee. He only does exactly what I ask him to do and 50% of the time not even that. Today he was running late for personal reasons instead of sending me his boss a message. He messaged his friend in another department. He’s had a corrective action form. I don’t know if he really is that dumb or he wants to be to fired. Any insight would be helpful?

It could be a mix in my experience.
Older employees can simply disregard you because you’re younger. I’ve had to be very direct in asserting expectations and our roles.
In another situation, forgetfulness was the issue and I had to be annoyingly micromanagey with calendar reminders.

I’m this situation, it sounds like you need to set time and directly confront what’s happening.

On the surface it sounds like it’s time for this person to be managed out. However, based solely on your post, your own communication could be improved as well. You haven’t included what the culture or job requirements are regarding in-office timing: is this an hourly position and he’s not getting paid until he’s clocking in, or is this a salary position and exact in/out times are flexible?

Also, the fact that you lead with this employee’s age being a factor is a major red flag. Consider your biases, and how you or the company react to the same behavior by other employees before taking any action.

What’s the best way to deal with a partner that prefers working solo? For context, this writer I work with conceptualizes by himself, emails the Account team, gives deep input, and makes decisions for us without consulting with me (his “partner”) most of the time. While I appreciate his proactiveness, I feel excluded, limited, and without much room to co-lead the work with him. I don’t know how to bring this up without sounding like I’m b*tching about it.

Originally from Italy, I've been out to anyone at my former jobs in Europe without ever worrying about the reactions of my coworkers. Now I'm Asia and just started a new job, but one of my colleagues (also an expat) made a very weird statement about gay people having more chances of developing cancers (?!?!?), so I feel a bit skeptical about talking about my private life... The problem is that anybody else seems to be so welcoming and open-minded, except for this one guy. Any advices?

So, I just fired my first employee as a manager and I'm heartbroken. He was a great, great person but after 6 months on a PIP he just wasn't cutting it skills-wise. I know he was the provider of the household and his wife didn't have a job since she was raising three young ones. Needless to say, I had to take off because I felt terrible, sick to my stomach. How do you deal with firing guilt? Is that a thing? I can't help but feeling like I did something wrong.

I work part time for a startup for equity and am attending an event on behalf of the startup. I’ve only been here a few months and asked multiple times to have a prep meeting with my boss. He instead sent me a 15 page document outlining 40 questions I should be able to answer the day before the event.
I’m so incredibly stressed as I don’t want to show up unprepared and make myself look bad. Idk how to make light of this situation at this point

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?
