I have a my first screener interview this week for an in-house role. Interview is with the talent manager/recruiter at the company. What should I expect?

Your goal is to get past this person so you can get a real interview. Don’t hard no anything (ie., distance, relocation, etc.). You’re open. Try not to give a salary in case it knocks you out of consideration.

like

Typically, you’re going to answer questions about your background to see if your qualifications are a good fit with the open position.

like

And whether you’re someone who can get along with the rest of the team

expect to answer questions

Depends. Most screeners are for basics, verifying details, making sure you are a human who can have a phone conversation, confirming pay expectations, telling you about the company and the role. Occasionally there are more substantive questions.

like

Recruiter is going to get a sense of whether there’s a potential fit. Will ask what you’re looking for, tell you a bit about the company, etc. If you’re prioritizing a good fit, be honest about what you want. If you’re just trying to get the hell out, tell them what they want to hear.

like

This is all helpful. If they ask about pay expectations, should I flip it back to them and ask if they have a range in mind? Feels risky to let them anchor

Assuming no range on the posting, I usually say something like "I'd like to learn more about the role and comp structure before giving a number. Are you able to share the range for this role?" Out of dozens of screens over the year, I've only had a few companies decline to share.

like

Expect to answer questions around your values and how they align with the company. Be prepared to answer why you're interested specifically in this company (i.e. read their website and the job description thoroughly). Be prepared to answer questions related to your experience and any questions they may have about your background (short tenure at previous role, gap between roles, etc.). Remember that the talent manager/recruiter may not focus solely on legal roles so don't use a lot of legalese. Use straightforward language. Ask good questions around how you can add value to the team or org.

Also, congrats on getting your first interview!! Exciting!

like

They’re going to have your resume right in front of them but ask you to walk them through it.
-This is when you vocalize all the ways your background aligns with the job description.
If they want someone with XYZ regulatory experience talk about that. If they want someone with contract drafting talk about the extensive contract work you do. Dont make them guess if you’re qualified. Let them know you hit all the basics and most of the preferred qualifications.

They’re likely going to either ask you directly about salary expectations or they’ll tell you the range and ask if that’s going to work. Some companies have moved into a very upfront approach to comp. They tell you it’s based on 2-3 factors but give you a good idea of where youll land. If they ask you for your first number just confirm the range listed in the description is within your target.

Do companies typically blacklist you if you received an offer and rejected it? For example, let’s say you were interviewing for Microsoft and during the final interview you didn’t like what you heard. They give you an offer and you reject it. However, there are still other roles at the company you would like to interview for.

I’m so scared to let a relationship that gives me anxiety go because I’m 36 F and feel like I’m not going to find anyone else. He’s not a horrible person, but he can be inconsistent. When I bring it up to him he says he’ll try harder but then always goes back to default. I stick around because I think it’s more a personality trait and not that he’s not interested in me (maybe I’m naïve). Could really use some encouragement from a bunch of strangers.

My natural instinct is to assume rejection if I have conflict with a partner or don’t think my feelings are reciprocated. I’ll try to bring it up with them, but I’ll say “if you want to end this feel free” so it doesn’t hurt me (and they can say what they really mean instead of sugarcoating). Someone told me today that they just assume I’m not interested because I always seem to “run” but I’m not sure how to bring up problems/feelings otherwise. How do you approach these hard questions?

How reasonable is it to ask for a bump in title - Senior counsel or Head of Legal, US? If it matters, I am a 6th year and have been told that I will be expected to hire a junior or paralegal as we build up.
