I have a PhD defense soon and work at a public sector organization.

My manager indicated that I must use my vacation (it means i will work for almost whole year). My organization offers 15 day paid leave for a Phd defense. Your manager should approve the application. Should I indicate that taking an unpaid leave might make my economic situation worse? I do not want to disclose my personal life, at the same time want to convince for the paid leave, instead of unpaid or using earned holiday.

I've never heard of anyone talking an unpaid leave to prepare their defence...

like

In general, no. That would be a discretionary grant on your employer’s behalf

I don't get the question. You say your organisation offers an actual benefit of 15 days paid PhD defense prep and you ask us if he could force you to take unpaid time off? So weird. I wouldn't even ask, just say "I am taking 15 days off per the agreement". That's that. You're in Norway. And just step up above his level of he makes a fuss

Actually, all vacations are approved by the manager. Even earned holiday, though you have full right to take it, the manager/leader must approve when you take it (considering workload etc etc).

and that is what he said me "yes, rule book says you can apply, but that doesn't mean it will be granted as well".

I eventually managed to get paid off through my immediate manager :)

Recommendations for firms to look into in South FL? I'm in Ft. Lauderdale but am open to Boca or Miami. I'm a first year associate in ID (coverage issues) but really would prefer transactional work. More importantly though, I'm looking for companies who pay relatively well (doesn't necessarily have to be market), are open to remote/hybrid work, aren't sweatshops. I'd settle for insurance work if theres good WLB & $$$ lol
