Bc people lie and they want a springboard to discuss how you think and own responsibility with an example you’re well versed in and comfortable speaking about
It’s a hard pass for me.
I just learned it’s not even allowed. Look into it.
It's allowed and many US companies (tech and advertising) ask applicants to draft test projects expected to take "no more than 4hrs", along with presenting to the team.
In my case the "test project" often speaks to existing client briefs and/or up-coming projects.
Whether they hire you or not, they'll retain your approaches, ideas and concepts for their brainstorming. Best to share over screen during a presentation rather than email over .PDF deliverables.
I’ve been in the business for a long time; I’ve hired hundreds of people. To date, I’ve never given a test assignment. And I’ve never done one. If someone turns out to be a phony, I can always fire them. But I have never had THAT happen either.

Building off GD1 - it can be difficult to distill individual contributions from a portfolio.
Not all assignments are as nefarious as CS1 suggests, but certainly some are.

Managers insecure in their own abilities.
