IMO you are not out of line for asking about compensation and benefits. I’d ask other substantive questions first to show that you care about the job and not just money. If this is the last interview you’d have before the offer I think it would possibly be more odd not to ask. Be prepared to have a general range in mind, based on research, if they flip the question back on you.
I know it’s easier said than done though, what an awkward topic. Why can’t they just put it in the job description?!
I would want to know and I think it’s a fair question to ask, but I can see the flip side of things.
A tactic that’s been used against me with interviewees - “Do you have a timeline on making a decision? I have been interviewing elsewhere and need to get back to those firms. I wouldn’t have taken the second interview if I wasn’t really interested in working with and growing with your firm”
