This doesn't make sense to me. If the associate is let go, your duties and job security should go UP if anything. We're assuming the same amount of client work is coming in, correct? SOMEONE has to still do that work and it's a safe bet that at least some of what that associate did could be done by paralegals.
Same amount of work is coming in. The associate hasn’t brought in enough fees to pay for himself. The partners told me I was just along for the ride and understand that not all of this is on me.
I think this would create an opportunity for you to do more work. My main attorney left and it shifted what I did but my job was never on the line.
Are you strictly tied to the associate? Interesting. At our firm paralegals are floaters with interchangeable skill sets and work with various associates/partners in the practice group.
Yes, I work for this associate but occasionally work on other cases for the two partners that my associate is assigned to if that makes sense.
Can you help the associate get better? Do they know their job is on the line?
I have tried to help him. I have told him what the partners expect from him. I’ll block time off on his calendar for meetings or to set time aside to work on certain cases, he just does not do it. I believe he knows his job is on the line.
Does this associate generate his own case load or client book? Is this litigation? If the associate leaves and the cases all stay then I imagine they’d have to find another associate to take his place and you would work with the new associate and help the transition. But if you think his position would not be replaced and instead just be eliminated then yeah I’d worry if I were you and start looking.
Cases are assigned to each associate from the partners. Litigation cases. I’d imagine the cases would stay with the current firm.
