Say you’d like to give it a thought based on how the interviews go, but would like to understand the budget for the role
I was told by a Sr. HR professional that you always go mid- high and ask for at least 10k more than what you really want because they will always to talk you down
My general rule of thumb has been to add 10-20% to my current salary and ask for that.
That's not a good rule for 2 reasons:
1. You might be severely underpaid in your current role
2. The pay range for the role and industry you're applying for might be much higher (say 50% higher) than what you're currently making, so you'd end up lowballing yourself and coming in on the lower end.
Always conduct a market rate analysis and go from there.
SM at D ranges from 175-250k, of course there are cases higher or lower. Aim a little higher than what you would accept. Maybe ask for 220k base?
I would ask for no less than 220k.
