I have made a decision to purchase a firearm for my own protection. Many of my cases involve gang violence and trafficking, and I'm paranoid about someone getting angry about a verdict and seeking revenge or something. Has anyone else done this? How did you talk to you family about it? I know they're not going to feel comfortable with it but I think it would give me peace of mind.

Where are you located? I’m in Texas, and it would be weird if you didn’t own at least a handgun. If your family isn’t on board, don’t tell them. They don’t need to know your business and it’s not like you’re going to be open carrying to Christmas dinner.

Let me add, please make sure you store it in a locked place (like a safe), unloaded, and far out of reach where your kid(s) could get their hands on it. Safety is the most important thing here. Learn to shoot it, unload/load, store, and handle it before you purchase.

I will agree with the safety thing.

There is a line from a Streets song “it’s never gonna be the Jackie Chan scene it could have been” that is pretty on point here.

You, or someone in your family, are dramatically more likely to be injured by the firearm than anyone outside of that group.

Decide who you want to be.

This is a weird city and/or class thing. Something like 45% of American adults own firearms. It’s not a big deal.

Best advice: do the training and go to the range. It’s fun. Have your family learn gun safety too.

Make sure you know how to use it comfortable and keep it some place safe/secure but accessible. I know multiple crim defense/family law attorneys that carry or have on their office space, and not without merit! Best of luck!

Same practice area. Was actually on a “list of witnesses against us” from an OMC. Was close to purchasing but I also have a unique family situation that makes me concerned about access to fire arms, even when under lock and key. To me there was less peace of mind than more.
