I have to fire someone who is very likable but lies frequently (and often times about dumb things that don’t ultimately matter that much). He was written up for it twice and today I have definitive proof he lied about a very small scale tech change. He lied to me, he lied to the team, he lied to the client, and it went into production a full month after he said it did. It caused immediate problems and then he sat on it for 2 days until it ballooned and he had to tell me.

My boss told me I’m not doing it, that he did it to himself and he’s right. I put in so much time and effort to try to rehabilitate him, I wasted so much time mentoring him for nothing Bc he never changed despite having done so at first glance.

And while half of me is pissed, the other half feels bad. He’s the first I will have ever fired. He has 2 young kids and a wife who doesn’t work. We live in an expensive part of the country and there’s a pandemic.

How do I get over this sadness?

I don't have a suggestion, but we're dealing with an exact replica (seriously, non-working wife and kid situation). They have amazing communication skills and can speak out of any situation. At the end of the day, we don't change folks. It's up to them. I also feel like I can't say anything, and leadership seems to turn their head. He actually got promoted smh.

Just joining this bowl. I see you posted this 6 weeks ago. But I was wondering how did it go? And how did you get over the sadness?

Is my manager forcing me out?

In our 121 last we had a good discussion on creating a personal development plan, with the idea being I’d write down clear goals & action points to get from my current level to the next, and I’d provide weekly evidence of it. I prepped the doc accordingly, but instead of wanting to discuss it, he said I have 4 weeks to “turn things around” - without giving any new info on what I’ve done wrong - esp given I wrote my goals based on this same feedback from last week??

The role is in FinTech

Anyone out there in a role like this? Any books. videos or even best practices to share?

With my partner we are considering making a move to the countryside of Switzerland, with a gorgeous RE project offering incredible views on immaculate mountains and lake. However, it is far away, and will require 1h+ train/car commute vs. 10 min biking right now. We are scared it will bite us back at some point, although COVID helped w/ remote working being a new norm. The project will be done 2024, so I hope to have a more relax job by then.
