Get a lesson at your local range to make sure your fundamentals are still there. Most likely, you’ll have picked up a few bad habits. Then hit the range from there.
I'd second this. A lesson (even just 1 to give you a good sense of where to start at the range) would be huge to getting back into it.
First thing I would look at is replacing the grips on your clubs. Secondly, how’s your flexibility? I took an extended period away from the game (>10 years) and had to work really hard to get even close to my previous form.
Flexibility will need work, not something I had thought about, thank you
As others have said, start with lessons. Don’t do anything with equipment until your pro advises. Spend more money on lessons than kit. Welcome back! And remember, don’t hit it harder, hit it better!
I have enjoyed the simulators as practice when the weather isn’t as great. Plus, if you go to one with good equipment, you can get helpful feedback from the data (best to learn from a pro in a lesson)
Welcome back! For short game purposes, get comfortable with your putting stroke again. Getting consistent on putts from 3-5 feet will make the game more enjoyable.
Also, as a big dude, how do I mentally work on not trying to kill the ball when I tee off? It's the weakest part of my game.
I mean it depends how accurate you are. It's fine to really go after it if you're consistent off the tee, but I assume maybe you'd prefer to hit the ball more consistently than trying to smash it every time. I find this difficult too, biggest thing I've found is teaching your brain that the ball will go far if you make a good solid but consistent swing. Takes a lot of patience in my experience.
The gym is the best place to start. Two weeks of stretching and yoga exercises will help more than you know. Loosen up those hammies, glutes, and back.
