I hit Coast FIRE but mine was lower at $300k. I’m also 29 YO, single, and will inherit family home (only child), in the meantime I live with my parents and don’t mind living with them. My career aspirations are shrinking the more I work. I was looking into applying for similar jobs but abroad? Or teaching English in Spain or France. I have a job now, thankfully, so I’m looking from a position of privilege. I did save 6 months emergency fund and working toward 1 year. Advice on how to cope?

Don’t over-rely on anticipated privilege. 300k saved is insufficient and will require you to get back into the job market, possibly after your value has declined. Your parents are one disease, car accident, lawsuit, elder care stay away from consuming all their wealth. You may have kids one day, which are superior to sabbaticals, travel, FIRE, coastFIRE, and just about everything else I can think of. You are heading into the wealth building years of your life. Be careful with the trade off.

like

Agree with KPMG1. Once you have kids, they’ll likely take priority over your previous goals. Better to save more now prior to kids and spend more time with them when they arrive.

wait. 300k is sufficient? how is the math mathing? are you planning to retire at 70? i cant see how that is doable retiring before 70.

I’m trying to coast until 60. It’s coast fire so I still have to work but I can get away with way less income at this point. Coast means I don’t really need to save for retirement so I live on my full income. Granted I’ll probably save a little still, I am already used to saving.

I posted a while ago on wanting to stop working now or take a drastic pay cut for coast FIRE. 1.2M brokerage as my bridge and safety net in coast FIRE until I can access my retirement accounts which are currently about 700k (I am 40 yo). Most people said to keep working another 5-10 years which I think was wayy too conservative and missed the whole point of .. I want to live my life now while my kids are young. You know your situation, nuances and math best. While this group can be a good sounding board, they are generally way over conservative. Your money is growing, your time is not.

We are really in similar situation. I am 39 with 1.4m in brokerage and 700k in 401k, probably another 0.5m in home equity. Single income household with 2 kids.

Now I am seriously thinking about moving back to my home country and find an easier life, where healthcare and education is much much more affordable. And I can worry free coast until retirement.

I feel very much burned out.

CU1 I just want to thank you! I read the book yesterday and it has actually really helpful. Appreciate the recommendation.

I agree with the folks here that $300k is likely not "Coast FIRE" with realistic assumptions. Talking about 8% real returns, 5% SWRs at age 58, never having kids, moving abroad to retire, these are just not reliable things.

What is it that you hate about your job, OP? What is it that you do? You may be able to find a different job or career that leave you happier without the drastic step of planning never to save again. :)

smart

Of course it's up to you and it might be the best plan for you. Could easily be. I am probably "Coast fire" by some definitions but I am pressing through to FI and not coasting.

Personally I find meaning in my job. Those Powerpoints I make, they are about how we make the drugs that save patients. The Powerpoints are just part of that process the same way that, say, peeling potatoes and frying hamburgers in a mess hall is part of winning a war.

Would you find more meaning in your coasting job, or just less stress? Is there another FIRE style job that would have more meaning or less stress? Would your family like you living with them for the rest of your life? Would they like to watch you coast? Would you like living with them?

Once you stop working, you will realize real soon that it isn’t easy to find another job that pays you 300k.

Which is good brokerage account for etf and stocks. Can't use robinhood due to restrictions

I’m considering building up my I bonds to eventually replace my 6 month expenses emergency savings account. Any downsides I’m not considering? If I slowly ramp up and ladder, I can partially withdraw any amount if I need to after a year. Even with lower inflation in the future, I’m guessing it’s going to beat a savings account yield. Thoughts?

I’m looking for assistance on building your own portfolio in my traditional 401K. I’ve been reading that it’s important to choose funds with low expense ratios. Also, that it is recommended to have at least one US stock, international stock , and bond. I am 24yo so ideally, I’d want to allocate 90%-100% to stocks and 0%-10% to the bond. Home reno financing question. Have a big project coming up in the $120-150k range. Funding sources are:
- 90k from a heloc around prime
- 10k from a credit card that offers promo checks at 2-3% for 12-18 months
- 375k in a brokerage
- 5-6k per month cash that I can put towards the project, loans, or brokerage

I don't want to stop funding the brokerage because my FIRE plan is less numbers based than "hoard like dragon until it's enough" but maybe I should... How would you optimize?
