I like the idea of anonymously venting so here are some highlights:
- Director of client services rewrote a creative brief I wrote. And didn’t tell me (director of strategy). I found out as I was mid-presentation to the client and realized the words on the page were… not mine.
- I had to fire someone but the employee was out for their parent’s funeral. I kept pushing back that we wait, just give it a little breather. But HR actually suggested we do it the day after the funeral while the employee was still out on bereavement leave.
- I was written up for being unprofessional. Examples included having a pile of clothes (folded, ready for donation) behind me while on Zoom, and bringing my dog to a casual dinner (at a dog-allowed Airbnb, no clients).
- I was there just under one year. In that time there were more firings than I can remember from any other job I’ve had. Not layoffs. Firings. They don’t do anything to invest in people.
The agency and 6 of its 10 “leaders” are simply rotten, but I am still devastated. They made sure to tell me my work sucks and that’s why I’m fired. I’m trying to tell myself my work was just too good for them. But I already had imposter syndrome and now it’s multiplied by 100.
Thanks for the space and permission to vent here. 🙏🏻
They sound awful
Take the $$$ and disparage secretly only in phone calls, no written trails lol
Talk to an employment lawyer before you sign anything.
Seems legally unenforceable. I think take the money, disparage as loudly as you need in the safety of fishbowl anonymity and 1:1 convos with folks when it makes sense, don’t write any articles about them & move on.
Find a good employment lawyer. Bet you can squeeze more out of them. And you can anonymously still trash them here.

Take the money. Ask for more money. How long were you there?
Disparage them anonymously.

I’d take the two weeks then.
I'm very sorry that happened. I know it's not much of a consolation, but at least you're free of them now.
Thank you so much. That is the silver lining. Awful place.
Name and shame
Severance, it should be noted, is not a requirement, but a peace offering from a company, so yes, it is generally seen as an act of goodwill to protect a company’s reputation.
Two weeks per year of service is the norm, so the fact that you have been there less than a year makes this actually seem logical.
Having said that… you could put a lot of energy into going after them somehow, or you could take this small cash gift and be grateful that you were paid to leave what sounds like a really toxic environment.
I realize, easier said than done sometimes, but I think you should take the money, move forward, and never look back at this place.
OP, I am so sorry for your experience. This is too close to you now. The time will come when you will look back and feel at peace for getting out of that sh@thole. Play your cards and try to get an additional 1 or 2 weeks severance. Nothing to loose there. Bring up your commitment, collaboration and all that stuff people love to hear. I was in a similar situation years ago and spoke to a lawyer. Not to sound discouraging, but the cost and effort was not worth it- it is a tedious (and bad for your mind) situation putting the pieces together to build an argument. That was my take on that and decided not to pursue. Whatever you do, good look. Sending you good vibes.
You can always negotiate more money or a month of benefits… that is something people don’t usually know. I learned this when I was let go from another agency and my HR person was kind enough to let me know that I did not have to just sign the separation papers without negotiating my severance. They ended giving me an additional sum that would cover private health insurance for me an my family for a couple of months.
Take the money. The contract also probably says they can’t disparage you. Which might come in handy if you need them to give a reference to your next job.
As someone who is on the move, I’d love to know what the agency is to make sure I don’t land there. But take the money.
Sorry to say but your Offer Letter likely held a non compete, non solicit and non disparagement. So take the money whatever you do it’s not worse risk. It’s sounds like place you’re better off away from. The best revenge is a bright successful future.
How long were you there isn’t two weeks very low?
Looking at your background on zoom.
Is also another thing they added to the why!
I used to meet with my CD who always had clothing all around on the zoom ! She stated nyc has no closet space and she had a studio.
Yes I heard you can fade out the background on zoom. I need to find that out as well.
It’s not enforceable
