Sometimes, it just comes down to luck mate. Rejection is a part of life - the sooner you make your peace with it the fastest you’ll wade through to success. Remember this, one day you may be the client, and you may reject OW without an explanation / because there were ‘more qualified’ firms ;)

I wouldnt read too much into it, its a numbers game and more about luck than anything else sometimes. Somebody just as qualified could have applied sooner than you did and that could literally be it.

They closed out the requisition and everyone who they didn’t select got an auto email. This use to be more common but since these days companies have so many candidates per req, they’ve stopped with the auto email.
I was rejected from OW right out of undergrad. I’m not terribly good at those SJTs/standardized tests and came from a non target (but had a high GPA).
I didn’t get to interview despite having 2 EMs refer me. I REALLY think it’s the non target schools thing though. It just raises the bar that much higher for you to even get a screening test.
Dust your self off and on to the next.
You can always get 2 years of experience at a FI/other consulting firm and reapply as an C/SC

Wow. Could you share insights as to how you got into BCG please from an undergrad?
As others have said, it’s sometimes just the luck of the draw. I’ve been overqualified for jobs and not even gotten an interview. And other times I’ve been under qualified and gotten an offer. Can’t take it personally

Continued: My GPA is 3.9 from a non-target, I meet qualifications and have decent resume experience (pro bono consulting that lead to good results, previous internship at a startup, starting my own businesses) but didn't apply with a referral
There’s people who have better stats than you in each metric that also got rejected

I could wall paper a house with all of the rejection letters I’ve received from consulting firms, investment banks, asset managers, and broker dealers to name a few. It’s a numbers game keep on going, and if you don’t get an internship it’s not the end of the world contrary to what everyone will tell you. Just have a summer job, show you’re doing something with your time. Find opportunities to develop relevant skills at that summer job, such as dealing with customers, maintaining relationships, managing the books, etc.

What are some target schools anyway?

First of all, they have way more jobs than intern slots, so this is not the end of the process.
Second, they have way more qualified candidates than they can interview. So they will have to deselect some that meet the criteria.
Move on to the next one. I applied to 15 firms out of university, got 2 interviews and 1 job offer. Absolutely loved that job. Then at business school I got 4 job offers (2 Bain and BCG). You can turn this around no problem.

As a non target you should be actively networking with and prepping for all MBB/T2, because the odds of getting an interview is more stacked against you than you may realize
Keep your head up. Intern program does tend to be quite small and even a great resume is no guarantee of an interview. Odds tend to be much better for full time recruiting, perhaps especially at non-target schools.
Entered consulting out of a very non-target undergrad. Referral and building connections is key and likely the only way. Leverage your alumni networks and look for people who have entered firms with a top MBA and your undergrad.
