I don’t know your situation but personally, I probably would. If you have the energy to stick it out for at least a year then you can make a more informed decision about whether you stay, if you move teams, or maybe you use this position as a steppingstone to something else. Especially in this economy, I would take what I could get.
It depends on your situation and how badly you need a job. And if you think you can survive in that environment. The jobs that have paid me more in the past I’ve found to not have aligned in other areas, leading to very short term stints where I’ve quit and as a result wasn’t able to take advantage of the higher salary.
I took a job with a company that had a very toxic culture, I quit within one month. I think bigotry was involved, but it is not acceptable for a grown person to scream at his elders like a spoiled child. This type of aggression is not only condoned, but is encouraged in order to “ toughen up “ employees and increase productivity but ultimately it has the opposite effect, in my opinion
As someone who just got out of an extremely toxic workplace, I would say that you need to be honest with yourself. Can you work in a place like that and not let it impact your personal life? I was depressed and got sick as a result of years in a toxic place.
I would not.
I just made the same move. It totally depends on your perspective, but I have a family and would do anything to give them a financial future they deserve, even if it means bearing a “toxic” work culture.
On the other hand, if you’re financially independent, don’t have many expenses, and feel like you have job security (whatever that means these days) maybe it’s best to wait for a more “perfect” opportunity! Just my two cents
Having worked in a very toxic environment with a crazy owner, I would say it is not worth it. I would never do it again.
Rising Star
I've been out of work going on 7 montjs now, and the only possibility for employment in the pipeline is a roughly 50% drop from what I was making, so understand that desperation will color my response. I personally would take it and grind it out for my family's sake out of necessity, and be very intentional with every dollar to make full use of the better income.
All that said, 2 grand a month after taxes isn't a life changing amount unless you have goals and are intentional about reaching those goals. A car payment and rent on a better apartment could eat up every bit of the increase, and your day to day life will look exactly the same as soon as the newness of the car and apartment wear of, and it will wear off much quicker than you want it to.
Hell no my piece is most important until I reach over 100K then I’m all in
Do it. Get money or die trying.
How many people actually do online reviews? Yea, not too many. Most likely those reviews were done by someone who was always complaining, wanted red carpet treatment, was a less than stellar employee or was a menace themselves. I would NOT give up a job based on online reviews. Get in there and find out for yourself. Everyone has a different experience and you might LOVE it. Those claims could be false. Unless you really know some folks on the inside, don’t let some comments ruin it for you.
I might, but only if my role there was senior enough to help change the culture. If the CEO is a well-known a-hole? Probably not.
Note the timestamps. Are the bad reviews recent?
You’re an SWE but 30k is a massive step? How do benefits compare? If the new opportunity doesn’t cover any family, lacks 401k match or vests it over 6 years, has high co-insurance or only a crappy HMO, or wants you to work in their crappy office or on MS Winders, the net may not be so compelling.
Trust your gut. I’ve been burned by not doing so.
One thing I ask in interviews is what the interviewer likes and what they would change. What they say — or don’t — can be telling.
I would request a quick call with the hiring manager and voice your concern.
I would do this. I have worked at a company in the past that has only 1 star and 5 star reviews. The 1 star reviews are all on point; management “encourages” 5-star reviews. I was miserable. Family and friends got tired of me complaining about it. At the time I needed the job. I did not stay long enough to put it on my resume.
Having just left an environment like that, I would say no. But honestly, it depends. how close is the toxic leadership to YOU? Where are you in your career path? How employable are you? Do you have other choices? Good luck however you decide.
30k is not a lot to have mental problems ahead.
Why not? Think of it as a challenge then a free lunch! Work is called work for a reason, it's not fun. If it is so bad, then I'm sure there are some pretty smart people there that can teach you a few things! I would prefer to work with people that want to work and not BS.
You're absolutely correct to pause and really reflect on this. I've experienced some of the best companies in my career but as of late I've experience some of the worst. For me, thankfully, I was in a position to leave after 6mos when I could see it was not going to get better, and my sanity is slowly returning. But now I'm back in this crazy market and of course have no guarantees what the next position will look like or how the environment will be. I've been offered interviews (not an offer yet) with reviews just like you're describing, and I got that pit in my stomach. But as others mentioned in my opinion, it absolutely depends on your financial NEEDS at this time.
Take the role just don’t post about it on LinkedIn
If you don't need the money I would wait for a better option.
What % jump would a 30k raise be for you?
I feel that’s fairly standard when switching jobs if you’ve been with your company for a few years and not worth having to put up with a toxic culture.
I’d do it for a 30% raise.
