Not the program itself, but I could see if you got into UC/NU with no $ but a full tuition scholarship to DePaul and we’re doing a transition from something like teaching to business (not highly competitive jobs)
It’s not worth it even for free, just a waste of time that could be better used networking and learning skills elsewhere
I got my MBA at DePaul in 1994. I was able to take the information and apply it to the real world. While I was attending I actually started my first company, it was a class project that became the real thing.
I don't know if my career would be different had I attended UC or NU. My GMAT was in the low 700s but I didn't even bother applying there. Both had really long applications, the task seemed daunting. It felt as if they didn't want me there. Depaul's was a one pager that started with "use ball point pen".
That application was probably my very first business lesson at DePaul : "be easy to do business with" :)
Why DePaul over Booth or Kellogg? Is that a real question?
There is no comparison. Booth and Kellogg are international brands with robust programs for networks and job placement. That’s what an MBA is primarily for. Even if all the class content was the same, the value for M7 remains.
Try to go top tier, then take an internship that will pay your tuition if you sign full time, and you’ll end up paying less overall. (They also have scholarships!)
I never recommend PT programs (went PT myself), and would recommend a PT program at M7 over DePaul FT.
Flipping PT to FT isn’t easy - only 1 person my year did it, and she did it after a few months. And PT means no participation in FT intern recruitment, which limits your options. If you get the GMAT score, figure it out. It’s been a life changer for me, personally. Went from $100k to $1M NW in 4yrs post MBA - market was a big factor, but the salary multiplier opportunity is undeniable for many.
As an NU alum, it’s written as NU in shorthand. It used to be NWU but they changed it to NU over a decade ago.
I had a free MBA on the table a million years ago from my employer. I wouldn't have gotten into NW/UofC and didn't think DePaul was good enough. Big mistake!!!! Don't worry about name, MBA is powerful on your resume.
-from someone without an MBA
I received my MBA from DePaul and largely chose it because it was significantly cheaper, allowed me to do a two year weekend program and continue to work full time, and it carries solid weight if staying in Chicago.
No regrets.
Risk Management. Operational and Credit Risks are my focus areas.
I went there for undergrad and the value over other schools was its location so I could have multiple internships. You kind of lose that edge when talking about NW/UC for MBA. Good school but I don’t think it’ll open anymore doors than the others
Reasons to choose DePaul:
- you just want the diploma, not to leverage the mba into a different career path / significantly better paying job
- you are getting an mba to meet some kind of credential requirement (cpa)
- you’re getting the mba to go work at a community college
If you’re getting and MBA for the power behind an MBA, then UC/NW without question.
Recruiting is the only reason. If you can’t get in laterally, it’s a good entry method. I’d be unsurprised if the partner mentioned here didn’t pause his career for UoP. Prob did it online for personal reasons and didn’t see the relevance - the type to put “, MBA” on their LinkedIn. 🤣
I have an mba and I chose Loyola over UIC and NW. I had my reasons (many). I am sure some other people would laugh about them, but they were Important to me. Particularly not being a soulless douchebag. Being surrounded by like minded people.
So make the decision that’s right for you. For me it was and still is a major investment that has paid off, and I would not have it any other way.
Of course I’m “yell[ing] at [you]”
You’re such a brave martyr and victim after eating your own words
These comments seem a bit tone deaf. Not everyone can afford a 120-150K MBA program. The price tags of NU and UC are absurd. If you can get your employer to pay for it great. Otherwise maybe just me, but I’m not putting myself 100K+ in debt.
My employer said they'd pay for my MBA but laughed when I presented them with the costs for Booth and Kellogg. So, DePaul it was. I took a lot from it. MBAs are not super common in my industry (insurance) so it has helped me stand out. In three years I've doubled my salary. I know that's rare but I'm sure the MBA helped.
ALUMNI
Isn’t the larger point that most MBAs are worthless? I know people with Harvard marketing degrees that are the dumbest people I’ve come in contact with. You either know business or you don’t. It’s really all about experience and networking. These just get you connections
