I myself am a lead. When we got this position, our goals were to be 20% managerial work, while maintaining an 80% production rate. I know that is an impossible number...its more like 60/40. Now I am not bragging, but my production is over 100% and I get my managerial work done. All the other leads are around 50/50. Except 1. There is a 2nd shift lead who is favored by the 2nd shift manager. This guy literally had 0% production for the last 2 mos. and Noone will say anything. Thoughts?

If I had a quarter for everytime I seen someone in a similar position that did a fraction of the work I or others were able to do, I could be on a remote island right now. Those situations are really difficult. Even if you do bring it up, the person favoring them will go above and beyond to discredit it, at least that was my experience with something similar. Really a rock and a hard place to be.

I believe the main reason why I am able to get so much done is because I come to work at 330am. This way I can do my work without anyone bothering me. But this guy is relatively new. He also does not follow instructions as per maintenance manuals for avionics equipment

So basically your doing more work by working a lot more hours than anyone else. Are you getting paid more for your extra work? Are donating your time? If the former you are choosing to do more for compensation and he is not. If the latter you are giving more than you are being compensated for and he is not. So now the question is, "are his goals attainable in the hours he is working?" If not you have identified the problem. If so you can begin to discuss his work ethic/attitude. The not following instructions about equipment is a completely different problem

In the business of leadership we all have to learn that those people exist at every level. The worst thing you can do is start looking at what poor leaders do, and just focus on making yourself better. You say you come in at 330am how early is that compared to your start time? A good leader always comes in early to make sure you are prepared for the day, but don't include that in your praise of yourself for exceeding goals. Also remember that some where people are going to expect you to be there at 330am. Focus on you and work to change what you can control.

My start time is 830am. My manager appreciates it but does not expect me to come in at 830. This way I get my 5s audits done for the week and post the following weeks results. He does his on Friday.

You go in 5 hours early? You are setting yourself up to burn out, if you have to go in that early to get your own work done you have to much on your plate.

Our annual reviews are approaching & one of my direct reports has been with us for almost six years w/ little growth. My reco was to let him go & find a stronger, hungrier & more motivated designer at the same level. However, my boss instead wants us to promote him in hopes that will spark some motivation. I am not behind this decision & have voiced my multitude of concerns in promoting an employee who doesn't deserve it. HR is behind the decision! Thoughts on promoting an undeserving report?

"Everybody can be a leader" some say... "Leaders are nurtured not born" say others... True.

But... this is also true: "not everybody wants to be a leader" (whether they can or can't be). It is a fairly common practice in organizations with traditional career management structures for people to "be promoted" into leadership roles as the "end steps of the corporate ladder" that was climbed doing technical work. And, unfortunately, this doesn't work all the time

I had a great review and a 5.5% raise and a great bonus at my company. But I also got a new Director and a peer manager of mine left the company, so I will be absorbing her team. In addition, my director said I will be receiving 'deep delegation' from them. I don't mind more work, but deep delegation is a new term I've never heard. What does that mean lol?

My remit quadrupled+ in a recent re-org with no increase in pay/promotion, my new director is new to the company and was zero help, and I was passed over for recent promotion during the comp cycle. The new director essentially began shutting me down any time I ask for clarity in my career progression. Now they have taken credit for the project I’ve been building over the past year+ without giving me props whatsoever to higher ups. What is the best plan of action here?
