I didn't know about consulting out of college, but after my first job I received a lot more offers so it should be easy to jump after half a yr
also everyone says prestige doesn't matter but for young people like us I definitely took it into account just don't let it get to your head
I’m in the exact same boat. Comparison is the thief of joy. No one cares where you went out of college. All things people have told me that I’m also trying to rationalize. Regardless, it’ll probably be ok in the grand scheme of things.
I joined McKinsey out of undergrad and I was honestly surprised how many people were there who were a few years older than me but started over as a BA at McKinsey after getting a couple of years of experience. They’re definitely better equipped than fresh graduates and if you want to go down that path later you definitely can- patience is key and nothing needs to happen overnight!
Identical experience here. +1
Go tech. On par salary for literally .3 - .5 X work.
As long as you get good experience/learn a lot during your first year you can easily hop over to somewhere more prestigious if you want
Just get some work experience and you can always apply for other jobs with 1-2 years of work experience. UHG is a great company and a great place to start a career. It can even give you a leg up applying to consulting if you are interested in life science / health care as an industry

The average person on the street doesn't even know what these b4/mbb acronyms mean. Our own family members look at us like we have 3 heads when we try to explain what we do all day. People really don't care - and that's freeing!
Sticking around at UHG for a bit will make you a really interesting experienced hire - you'll have some really unique Healthcare/life sciences experiences to boost your resume when you go for the firm you want.
This isn't a bad hand at all - play it well🙂
UHG is a great company to start out at and it is recognized as so. After 9-15 months you could absolutely jump into an experienced role at any of the big4. MBB will be a lot tougher but I’ve seen ppl get a BA role after 2 yoe outside
Ultimately, congratulations!! You should be excited for all you’ve accomplished and what’s ahead. And try to start your first job with an open mind, no matter where you are at.
Chill homie. Undergrad is just the beginning! Consulting will always be there! Getting a foot In the door will give you the experience you need to go to the next place. Be proud of where you are.
I was in the exact same boat. I hated my experience at EY during my junior internship. I didn’t make the final round for MBB, started at an industry analytics role, and then got an offer for mbb after more than a year. Not the end of the world, just treat your experience as a learning journey. Don’t give up!
My advice would be to find another firm. The mentality when going into consulting recruiting is to apply to any and all firms regardless of size, prestige, reputation, etc and consider all offers you recieve at the end.
I didn’t get MBB/Big 4 offers as a senior in college. I got 2 offers and choose the better fit for me at the time. I currently work for a firm that is tech focused, but bench is ridiculously big right now.
I think you can definitely break into consulting if you put your mind to it. Even if it’s not your first choice firm, just breaking into the industry outta undergrad is a milestone. U can always switch firms down the road.
Even once you break in, you may not have a most ideal start. I have been benched since end of training for 3.25 months now and I am now considering alternative careers/firms. Don’t care about size or prestige as long as I am staffed.
Work at a firm somewhere else for a year. Then apply, offers will come flowing in (competitive as well depending on how well u utilized year 1- knock if out the park so u can truly negotiate)
I’m only 2 years out of college & went from 70k to 110k (excluding (signing)bonus) all from that 1 year at a lower firm & getting a couple certifications while there.
Offers from big 4 came as well, so I def recommend you keep your linkedin updated always - as they all reached out to me but definitely look into which company culture you feel is the best fit for you. Big 4 may sound lit but i know alot of miserable ppl scared they will be let go due to the economy & time on the bench 😭
My first job was at a terrible consulting firm. Be happy you got an offer with UHG! Get that experience. There’s always opportunities to jump to prestigious firms after you gain more experience in consulting.
Rising Star
UHG as in united healthcare group?
I hope no one from UHG is on fishbowl and sees the HR new hire speaking negatively about their new firm….
I was in talks with a hiring manager at McKinsey and that particular team had a hiring freeze out in place until further notice just FYI
Be focused on what you wanna do, doesn’t matter where. I started in EY and then I decided to join a “smaller” firm a few months ago. I learning way more in Management Solutions, so again don’t be obsessed over the name itself
