I need advice. I'm 57 & I was forced to resign from the company I've been with for 18 yrs. Now, I was at the top end of the payscale. I was offered a job making $15-18 per hour. I don't live in a big city so real jobs that pay for my experience are extremely rare. I've been applying for months with no luck. That pay would barely keep me above water. Should I accept it if I'm offered the job @ $18? The actual duties are so little and totally stres free. That sounds great after my last job.

Amy,
I’m 60 recently divorced; was forced to close my business and just moved cross country. I’ve been looking for nearly 2 years and just now received my first interview. You might want to take it until something else comes up for you. Finding work at our age is much harder.

I'm from Africa, Nigeria, I'm 40 yrs old, an experience delivery logistics driver with Nigerian class G driver's license and also hold a Nigerian international passport with ten years validity, also have a degree in sociology... Seeking for an employment outside Nigeria with visa sponsorship. I need an employer to take me abroad and work in return to settle the expenses. Thank you.

I agree. I am also 57 and had a similar background, except I quit due to menopause issues. I've been looking for 3 years now. Tried many things just to get some money.. finding that most other jobs don't think strategically and think you're "wacked" for asking questions. It's been horrible. I was making 60k and can barely get $11 - 20 per hour. I have ended up helping my husband with his remodeling company and doing gig work. My 99 year old grand father helped me out. I never saw this coming in the work force. It's horrible!!!!!

My advice to you is in one word ageism

like

Hi Amy, I'm also 57, and was laid off from my last position in January. Finding another position like I had locally is nearly impossible - I also live in a small market. While remote work is appealing, it comes with a lot of competition. After much thought and much conversation with my wife, I came to the conclusion that my college-educated career may be over. And it may be time to consider doing something else. Doing something else likely comes with a pay cut because you have no experience in that field, so I had to look at other things in my personality, my health, and tidbits from my career. It took 7 months, but I accepted a job that pays $22 an hour. Not great, but manageable since I have some investments and savings in place until I can work up to a better wage. It's very different work, but it is far less stressful and I am no longer behind a desk all day which was a priority for me in my next chapter. It's physical work which is equally great and 'oh boy, can I keep up'. I guess my advice to you is, don't count any possibility out and keep an open mind. You'd be surprised where you may happily wind up.

like

If stress fee, why not take for whatever benefits it may provide while you continue to look. Easier to find a job when you already have one.

like

Accept and keep looking.

like

This basically happened to me.

like

I am in the same situation. Except my 2nd job is $18 so that is what I make now. They were able to give me F/T hours. Unfortunately nobody wants to pay well right now. I would take it and you can always still look.

like

Given how bad the job market is right now, I would accept any job offered, because you're unlikely to be offerer another one.

like

I wouldn’t accept this offer. Human Resource‘s only directive is to protect the company from loss. They are not your friends. They are not attorneys. Each state has specific laws concerning this topic. Some states favor employers while others favor employees. If you accept this offer, it‘s tougher to fight it later. Contact a lawyer in your state who specializes in employment laws or severance negotiations. Most offer a free consultation. Some charge a few hundred dollars for an hour consultation. It’s worth speaking to them.

like

This seems to be a case of "something is better than nothing". Accept it, while actively seeking better opportunities. Unfortunately, this is how corporate America and "trickle-down" economics work until changes that mitigate widening inequality are initiated.

like

Take the job!! Hands down

like

I agree with Diane B. I had a phenomenal business for 20 years. The impacts from Covid unfortunately, helped me close it. I cried for a year. Then, stroke of lightening...I never want to work that hard again for the rest of my natural life. Loved it though, truly. I too am over 60. Also, had a lucrative corporate career, however I have found that I am viewed as a "Dinosaur" in this newer world of computer programs. Not that I couldn't learn and would be eager to if they would be willing to train or encourage, just give me a shot. I have been Ghosted! Nothing! Age, business owner, and not up to date. I did take a job at less than $20 and hour. Love the job. The pay...SHOCKING! I certainly bring more to the table than being paid for. We even use our own cell phones to photograph work, answer their survey questions after every assignment, make our own schedules etc. I think that people simply acquiesce. Do this on their own time and accept that "that's the way it is." I thought, easier to get a job when you have a job but, NO. When do you have the time to research, apply and adjust the resumes? Sometimes at 1am. Oh well, I keep telling myself "the perfect right job, at the perfect right time" How's that working? NOT (at the moment} Good luck to all of us out there hustling and trying to figure it out.

like

Accept if only as a transition job. Keep looking.

like

I believe that you should take it as for the time being you cannot find something else. Keep looking though until you find something that you enjoy.

like

Amy, I know it is difficult being in this space. Are you receiving unemployment? If so, is it more than the offered hourly rate? If it is and you have the cushion, continue to look

like

Congratulations!!

I was the CTO for a public REIT when a new CEO came on board. First words out of his mouth was he was going to replace all the older workers. A few months later I lost my job of 6 years. I was 58 at the time. I've been looking since and have sent out over 20,000 resumes + with no nibbles. I was told by several companies that I was too old. There is a loop hole in NY law that allows age discrimination. Just to keep the dogs at pay, I had to settle for a minimum wage paying job in a very toxic work environment. Again, to keep the dogs at bay.

like

There's no loophole that allows age discrimination. Additionally, federal law supersedes state law.
Given what you stated , even if there was a loophole , it would be unlikely to cover such a blanket statement aimed at people of age. There is no set of reasoning that could validate or justify such a statement. As such, its actionable. Age cases are notoriously hard to prove. This one is a lay up .

I'm 27 and I don't have work for almost 5mos.

Unemployment

like

Yes. Accept this job. Don't sit at home, because sitting idle will have a negative impact on you.

As you mentioned, you've been working for 18 years. This is proof that you love work and movement. So my advice is to accept anything and don't sit at home without movement or work.

I apologize for my poor language.

like

The job market right now is so brutal, I would take it and continue to search. Yeah, $18 hour for what its worth seems to be new normal.

likefunny

Take it. The best way to find a job is to already have one. You can already move to something with better pay and benefits. If you are not working but interviewing for jobs, you are less attractive and seem more desperate.

Interviewing at a dream company, and right from the first interview the recruiter told me we are way off on salary expectations. This was a little bit expected, as the role is requiring a few years less experience than I have and also in a much cheaper market. They already told me the salary range during this first call, but wondering if they like me enough and I get an offer, how I might approach negotiating for more. I would be making much less than I do now, but it is a dream company.

It’s an executive director position, so I would assume it’s a decent target bonus, but without that in writing it could honestly be a gift basket at the end of the year.
