Amy,
I’m 60 recently divorced; was forced to close my business and just moved cross country. I’ve been looking for nearly 2 years and just now received my first interview. You might want to take it until something else comes up for you. Finding work at our age is much harder.
I'm from Africa, Nigeria, I'm 40 yrs old, an experience delivery logistics driver with Nigerian class G driver's license and also hold a Nigerian international passport with ten years validity, also have a degree in sociology... Seeking for an employment outside Nigeria with visa sponsorship. I need an employer to take me abroad and work in return to settle the expenses. Thank you.
I would take the job until something else comes better
I agree. I am also 57 and had a similar background, except I quit due to menopause issues. I've been looking for 3 years now. Tried many things just to get some money.. finding that most other jobs don't think strategically and think you're "wacked" for asking questions. It's been horrible. I was making 60k and can barely get $11 - 20 per hour. I have ended up helping my husband with his remodeling company and doing gig work. My 99 year old grand father helped me out. I never saw this coming in the work force. It's horrible!!!!!
Hello Amy,
I am sixty-one. I live in a very wealthy county near Nashville. I found myself with zero savings when I helped an adopted child begin a business in a neighboring state. He ran out on the business and me. I spent months struggling before refinancing my home to pay off the business mortgage. Figure, no business income and only my sole self-employment income to cover everything! I have actively searched for a remote position to help me cover my debt load until I manage to make another Real Estate Sale and close. I have been freelancing to keep the seams from raveling. Take the $18 an hour job! Look the employer in the eye and say, "I am of far more value than $18 an hour. In my first 30 days, I will prove this to you. I would like to speak about a wage increase after my first 30 days. With my experience and dedication, I am confident I can manage the responsibilities typically managed by two employees for this position. You have faced setbacks in your career. I found myself in a position of compromise when I was literally at the top of my profession and pay scale. I have no doubt that I will be an employee you not only want to keep employed, but one you wish you could duplicate. Promise me we will discuss a pay increase in 30 days. If the position has a pay limit, we can discuss adding hours for me to train new employes, I will train the new hires to manage their duties with the same work ethic and energy that I will have already proven in my first 30 days.
I know this may seem extreme. I have searched for 11 months religiously. My resume is top notch. I have only been offered a position paying $18 an hour remotely this week. I would have saved countless sleepless nights, and budding ulcers had I taken a job at this rate in my first 2 months of searching. I have faith that you will become so valuable this company will fear losing a staff member with your skills and ethics. The raises will continue.
You sound kinda excited about the $18 hour job because you said it will not be stressful and you like the flexible schedule. I say take the job! Go for it!
I'm 64, and from experience....
The way life works is that when you take the low or high paying job, soon after you will get a call from other places you submitted your resume, then you have to make a decision to stay or go... Good luck! - Andres
Hi Amy! I'm 54 and I'm on unemployment looking for work and, like you, the jobs available are very low pay. Since you resigned and did not get laid off I am assuming you do not receive unemployment...in that case I would say take the job and continue to look for something that pays more. If you are receiving unemployment and it's lower than what you receive with that $18/hr job then you should probably take that job....good luck!
well, looking at your age and considering your health i think its a good offer especially being stress free and should get you by pending you get something better.
If that's fulltime employment, $18 per hour = $2880 a month. That's money that you don't have. Better to take that job now and continue to look for better paying work.
Hi Amy: I'll share with you some advice a manager long ago once told me.." A little bit of something, is better then a whole lot of nothing". Given the current job market I agree with Diane's advice below take it and keep looking for something better...Good Luck🙏
Take the job!!! It's always easier to get a job when you have a job. This is not your life job this is just a right now job. Also things always have stress but how he handle this stress is the difference. Just remember to make sure you keep taking care of yourself and doing more things for yourself while you're in this new position. My suggestion is the biggest one is to find out with your last employer that forced you out to find out if they fired you or they did a layoff? If they did a layoff you need to go ahead and file for unemployment and backdate it to the day that you were first separated like the day that they told you to leave. They owe you unemployment. If they give you a severance package you don't have that usually they make you sign something. But If they shoved you out the door without just cause you have a very good case for unemployment should be pretty easy. I had gotten fired for post-retaliation after whistleblowing my boss. I will never whistle blow ever again. When I did job interviews I just said that new management came in and everybody was let go. It made it feel better too. Every job has stress and just know that you need to learn a way to deal with the stress. It's definitely going to be probably easier in some ways. Take about 2 weeks maybe 4 weeks and just settle down and get your cortisol under control. Then start looking again. Nobody cares if your job jumping it's just that you want something else. Take good care of yourself.
Also look into temp remote jobs they pay pretty good. You can also learn a lot from a temp. job and continue to gain experience and knowledge and a different skill set.
I want to read the comments and though it says “joined”, I can’t read them. I can only add one? So I’m adding one to see if the others show up.
pleas i atand job
hopefully you have saved a lot of money in retirement accounts and have received some attractive 'early retirement' benefits - so the $18/ hr job sounds good - life is too short to live stressed out. Keep earning and growing your future social security benefits. Do you have a life partner in the equation to help you make this decision? Two can live as cheaply as one but enjoy the security of two incomes.
Ugh - so sorry you lost your job at age 57. I was laid off at age 55 and applied for hundreds of jobs. Had several interviews, but nothing materialized. Super frustrating as like you, i was at the top of my payscale and made a very good living. I am doing freelance work that pays up to $27-$30 an hour and I can work as many hours as I want. I would take the hourly job until you find something else. It is some income at the very least. My current gig is stress free and I am considered partly retired. It's a bit of a stretch until I can fully retire and start drawing down on my IRA's (and it's too soon anyway)....so am hoping to make things work until I turn 59 1 /2 and then do a short term annuity. Good luck to you!
hi
Ma'am, please take the job for now. You will qualify for social security in a few short years, so maybe this is a blessing in disguise. You can always continue to apply for other jobs if this one doesn't work out.
if you willing to work a second job
I need jod I have licence
Can you help me with any job that I can earn $15 dollars per hour
Hmmm, off putting comment, I must say.
I'm sorry but, I think you're missing the point of my thread. Or am I sensing a little sarcasm???
I’m not sure what industry you’re in or what you’re looking for, but I was kinda in a similar situation at 56 and laid off. Recently.
I was making pretty good money and at the top of my field and now I’m finding it difficult to get that type of salary. If possible, you might look at remote opportunities in your field. Best of luck.
Yes lost my job too 7 months ago I have been selling laptops and mowing lawns to pay bills so take Intel better job come
I think you should accept the job at $18 to help pay for your basic needs while you hope for the best
