Amy,
I’m 60 recently divorced; was forced to close my business and just moved cross country. I’ve been looking for nearly 2 years and just now received my first interview. You might want to take it until something else comes up for you. Finding work at our age is much harder.
I'm from Africa, Nigeria, I'm 40 yrs old, an experience delivery logistics driver with Nigerian class G driver's license and also hold a Nigerian international passport with ten years validity, also have a degree in sociology... Seeking for an employment outside Nigeria with visa sponsorship. I need an employer to take me abroad and work in return to settle the expenses. Thank you.
I would take the job until something else comes better
I agree. I am also 57 and had a similar background, except I quit due to menopause issues. I've been looking for 3 years now. Tried many things just to get some money.. finding that most other jobs don't think strategically and think you're "wacked" for asking questions. It's been horrible. I was making 60k and can barely get $11 - 20 per hour. I have ended up helping my husband with his remodeling company and doing gig work. My 99 year old grand father helped me out. I never saw this coming in the work force. It's horrible!!!!!
So it depends on a lot of things. Do you have any other options? What were you making before? What are your savings?
I don’t need to know any of those answers - but they are all things you should consider. Keep in mind that I’m sure $18 an hour is more than unemployment- and get it doesn’t stop you from looking for other employment.
Good luck
I work for a healthcare corporation that pays $17.50 an hour for base pay front office positions. I think it is offensive that you are offered $18.00 with your experience.
Companies have no commitment to you, bottom line matters. So having said that. take whatever job you can and keep applying for something better. you are close to retirement and hoping you have something to keep you afloat during that time. Anyway, take a day off or a sick day if you get an interview for a better paying job. Enjoy the less stress relax and don't do more than the job description unless they pay more.. !
This is correct. You are replaceable.
Coach
I GOT A JOB TODAY!!! 🙏 🙌 I start tomorrow. Great vibes from go!! Great atmosphere. Most are my age, same work ethics!!! I'm so excited!!! Thank you, God!
Way to go what type of job did you land?
I have been looking for three months now been on quite a few interviews but no offers yet. I am 61 and I think that is playing a part. I am hoping for something soon
I'm 45 and feeling the age bias myself. I went from making a base of $90 to now $22/hour. I don't live in the state where my office is and I'm pretty sure the cost of living is higher in my state. I'm not allowed to use any accrued sick time until after 90 days, even though I've accrued almost 8 hours under Nevada sick time laws. I live in Florida.
Also my work schedule is remote, but when I was presented my offer, it said $47k annually. Never in the offer was an hourly rate. Then I see that holidays are unpaid until after 90 days as well. So I'm not even able to pay my rent all at once. I'm working extra hours trying to make up for hours lost but I'm just so burned out, I just want to cry all the time.
I've been in HR for 20 years and the most recent 6 years have been focused solely on recruiting. I'm doing well, but I'm very resentful because of the low pay and lack of commission, yet the owner wants to hire more recruiters but we all have to fight over candidates in our shared indeed account and I've been paying out of pocket for LinkedIn Recruiter Lite just so I don't have to share an account.
I don't have any better offers. I've been looking since Jan 2024. Nothing is working out. All of the pay ranges are so low now and I never expected to me my age making what I made in my early twenties, which children and a mortgage and the sole income. I've never felt so trapped in my life. And my work schedule is 10am-7pm with an hour lunch. I rarely take lunch but if I need to run an errand or attend an appointment I can, but I still have to make up the hours.
I'm in Jacksonville, FL. If anyone reads this that can maybe help me, please reach out. I'm not going to be able to stay afloat living on credit cards much longer.
If money is not an issue, I would freelance. There are many occupations available. Maybe learn a new passion, and create something you won’t need the 9-5. EDD will help pays for some of the expenses while you’re working toward your new goal. You can do this!
EDD is the employment development department. It is the department that managers the unemployment programs. Part of the services they provide is that if you are laid off and unable to find employment in your original field, you can apply for retraining, which basically allows you to receive unemployment while you are going through training/Learning a new trade. Sometimes you might be able to get into an apprenticeship program, but there are fewer of those. It’s been a long time since I looked at it, but I checked into it about 15 years ago. With all of the changes politically, I’m not sure what the funding looks like these days.
Hi Amy, this is a very common situation at the moment. I'm 61 and my current contract is almost up, and many of my colleagues (from the same project, and with similar levels of experience) are finding that their experience is not required in the current job market.
I don't know what you do, but in my profession (Engineering) there seems to be a belief by hirers that any experience beyond 10 years is superfluous - except of course for 'Senior Management'. I think there is a genuine belief that our skills can already be replaced by AI and cheap offshore labour.
My advice to you is the same as I'm giving to myself. Take the job to help cover the bills and use your excess brain power and energy to go into consultancy. That way when the current hiring farce is over and companies are struggling because of their current 'cost over value' philosophy, you may have the pleasure of charging at rates that suit you. And you will be putting your knowledge and experience to good use.
I flipping hate AI
YES ..and keep having faith things will work out
I don't know the details (just joined this bowl) but I don't like that you were forced to resign from previous role. Is there any action you can take with previous company? i.e. does your resignation mean you won't get severance or EI? But to answer your question, I'd take the new job but see if money has been left on the table at the old job
Amy, at this point in your career, you're probably better as a consultant/freelancer, than a full time employee. There are pros and cons, of course. But once you get used to the irregular flow of money and the work peaks, you'll realize that you get to manage your time more freely, and enjoy life better. So, unless you are in a financial situation that requires a steady income, consulting will most likely give you the best hourly rate for your experience; which could make up for the $15-18 per hour you've been offered now, investing half the time.
Fully acknowledging that AI is not without its bugs, try workshopping the idea with ChatGPT. Give it your background and your situation and ask it to help you work out a plan for launching yourself into consulting and freelancing. I am in the process of getting my certification for a therapeutic modality and hope to make a transition in the next year or so. It suggested group sessions and retreats to help me maximize revenue without exceeding my capacity.I’ve been using it to put together the frameworks for a six week group session series. Saved me a lot of time and, while I do catch errors every once in a while, it is still pretty good for bouncing ideas off of.
The age of choice is over. the global economy is imploding. slowly... but surely.
If you have an offer...take it. Keep digging away for a better opportunity of course. But understand that within the next few years the tech industry is going to shed millions of highly qualified tech workers who will all be competing for the jobs your being offered now.
This situation is going to get much much worse when the AI bubble pops.
TAKE IT!
Alas, but yes!
You should never resign if given the choice. Make them lay you off.
U.fortunately too many were laid off specially from tech companies. Just too many competition out there. US needs to employ US citizens first.
Or make companies that take jobs offshore to pay a tariff too!
Hi Amy, I live in rural Oregon and there aren't many high-paying jobs around here- so I expanded my opportunities by seeking remote work. I now make twice as much money and can work from Tahiti if I want to. It's an adjustment, but working from home can be great!
As far as taking a lower paying job for now- absolutely do it. Money is money- especially when you aren't able to collect unemployment!
I highly suggest looking outside of your areas of expertise for remote positions. For example, there are many jobs in tech that sound intimidating, but really only require you to know how to use a computer and be trainable (data entry, support, business analyst).
I know that it's uncomfortable to think about drastically changing your career and AI is coming- but these jobs are still around now.
If nothing else, expand your horizons to remote work to make yourself available to jobs outside of your rural area and entertain the idea that you could be valuable in very different roles than you've held in the past.
Good luck to you miss!
What kind of technology remote work do you do. How much experience do you need to have. I see a lot of these jobs offered; I had reservations about them.
The same thing happened to me! But i am 62. I was thinking of taking my social security early because it is just that hard to find a decent job with benefits.
Hi Amy, you need to do what is best for you or if you have family responsibilities that is best. I have two other sources of income, LUCKY me, the VA and a part time job (weekend 33 pr hr, 22 hrs) that barely keeps me afloat.. I mean, BARELY.
Another poster, in another thread I think said.. you take the job and keep looking. There is zero harm with paying the bills, rent, mortgage and putting gas in the car and food on the table though it is very much beneath you. They you double your efforts. Make time for interviews, get a professional resume redesign (AI helps).
I am 56, Senior Lv 2 support with Administrative account experience. Last job, 73K. I am interviewing for 85-114K jobs.
Keep looking here on Glassdoor, InDeed and LinkedIn for jobs.
I get these odd ball offers for $13, 18 or 20 pr hour and I am like.. honestly... most are from India and they are expected to split the commission between two companies so the fall back is on the amount you make
Try a recruiter?
From my experience, recruiters are a total waste of time.
It is illegal for employers to discriminate in hiring, firing, promotions, pay, or other terms and conditions of employment based on protected characteristics.
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), ensure fair treatment in areas like employment and allow individuals to seek legal recourse for discriminatory practices.
If you feel like you’ve been discriminated against, like demotion due to your age, you should reach out to your state agency or Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC).
Just went though a similar situations, Almost exactly the same. Went from working 70 plus hours with stress galore for the past 10 years, to 40 with of course the pay cut. I have found there is something to money can't buy you happiness. You might need to make some adjustments, but the quality of life will be worth it!
Unfortunately the longer someone is unemployed the harder it is to be employable… someone with a job is likely to move upward as deemed employable it has a currency to it ….
Probably a bit late however my comment was only an opinion not meant on any negative or derogatory way… structure in business had changed the backbone used to take pride in loyalty integrity and support…. Thise words have lost their meaning im old school and value employees and loyalty…. Hope the horizon is beautiful
