I’ll be honest, even though I live in a decent neighborhood, I would never open the door for someone I didn’t know. Even if I needed what they were selling. Super unsafe these days. Instead I would try Facebook marketplace or possibly even leaving flyers instead. Typically once you get one house in a neighborhood and do a good job, you’ll easily get more bookings in that area.
41 years in sales and we still don’t train people well. Have integrity and care for your clients. If you have the wrong product, let them go and thank them for the opportunity.
Be kind.
What is your product?
We've had so many door to door solar sales people come on our cul-de-sac over the past year or so that as a group we invested in No Solicitation signs posted at the entrance to the street and in front all but 2 of the 11 houses on the Street. I've been in sales my entire career and I still won't ever buy something from a door to door sales person, even if I need the product. It's a very different world then it used to be and in all honesty I find it very intrusive having someone knock on my door that I'm not expecting.
If you have ever used the app Next door people are constantly posting ring camera videos of sales people who knocked on their door and not saying good things about them. Good luck with your business but if it relys on door to door closes I think you will learn a very important message pretty quickly, people don't want unexpected knocks especially from sales people.
key is LOA and a strong short pitch training door to door is all about leading from the front might mean you Boys have to get out there develop a process
Completely agree. You first need to lead by example and develop a sales process. there are plenty of processes you can follow out there. Highly recommend to us AI to help develop and tailor to your needs. Also I would have every applicant fill out self assessment to determine things like if they’re resilient, self motivated, competitive, honest, etc. all of the core competencies you want from people who work for you. Again you can use AI to help customize as well. I would also get creative on marketing and developing worthwhile leads because door to door is so much harder these days. oh and practice the flywheel approach. Google that!
I ran dtd crews in Los Angeles. We did group interviews and were completely honest with those that showed up. We told them what they’d be doing and what they’d earn and told them that if they wanted to leave, they were welcome to do so.
1/2 of the people in the room would get up and leave.
Those that stayed would get the full rundown. We had a specific script and the goal was to get to the end. They couldn’t go into the field unless they could recite the script by memory.
We had 7-8 objection handlings that they would use. We didn’t require them to memorize those, but most would through repetition. If an objection came up during the pitch, they would recite the handling, then immediately return to the script.
We gave them a tally sheet to use in the field. We knew the ratios required to make a sale. 100 knocks meant you’d get 75 answers, get through your script 25 times and make a sale.
We’d use the tally sheets to determine the how to coach the rep.
Less than 100 knocks? More knocks.
Less than 75 answers? Bad territory or time of day
Less than 25 full script reads? Objection handlings need work.
25 script reads and no sales? Work on your closing/asking for the business.
Rising Star
I would hire for resilience and attitude before experience. Door-to-door is hard to fake, so I think honest expectations and strong coaching matter from day one.
There are Mormon organizations that have these resources. I used them in Colorado a long time ago. They are they best options for door to door sales from their mission experiences.
Door to door is the toughest of all of the types of sales I have done in a 25 year career in sales but once you get it right it's magical. I am happy to jump on a call with you to explain my strategy. https://www.linkedin.com/in/luke-ratterman-870a8699?utm_source=share_via&utm_content=profile&utm_medium=member_android
What are you selling?
I would look into retirement communities. Because older people hate cleaning windows
What field of sales are you interested in?
Very exciting starting your first business. I managed and did a lot of sales over my career cold calling in person and over the phone. Things have changed with more obstacles but there are always challenges so dont let that scare you. It will take a little time and you will go through some people. Feel free to reach out to me and I do not mind sharing and hopefully it will help you. I have a busy schedule at the moment so if I do not answer back right away feel free to try again or I will follow up.
Door to door sales is an old model, but can be effective depending on the product(s)/service. Many people won’t open the door for strangers. Hire a marketer and recruiter. Spend money on highly targeted advertising and attracting sales talent. Train your sales team to use the SPIN method.
Africans are willing to relocate if such opportunities come and we also ready to give our best by showcasing our marketing strategy with talent .
I would go to your local mall and pretend that you're shopping and there you will find the hungriest and sharpest young salespeople ready to break out and make a name for themselves who know how to talk to anyone.
