Are you sure they said those exact words? That's literally discrimination by age. I don't think any firm would do that. They might say your experience or something along those lines, but doubt they would say your age, otherwise sue and you'll make more anyways.
Number of years working? And I definitely have more non-consulting experience that I hadn't listed on my resume but that wasn't their concern.
It was that there were people that were older than me that were paid less. <-- specifically told me that. Doesn't that indirectly mean age?
It's only illegal to discriminate against older people, not younger. I think, 40 plus. Anyhow, ask for market rate. We pay management consultant people with 5 years of experience in tier 1 markets around 115 to 130 base. Laughingly we currently have a big 4 consultant coming over with 3 years of experience asking for the same range plus bonus. He's sharp. But he's trying to negotiate aggressively and about to get rescinded.
How much do you pay consultants with 9-10 years of experience?
My qualifications and experience was exactly what they were looking for. The only problem was my age?! Is that a thing? That's BS
I can't believe they actually told you that we the reason. Idk if that's ballsy or just plain dumb.
Seems illegal if that was the only reason provided and the primary reason that drive the decision
Federally age discrimination only applies for being too old (over 40).
The story here gets more confusing and changes with each new update. Maybe after they met you they decided you weren’t the right fit and it had nothing to do with age?
Maybe the recruiter messed up giving you that excuse and you actually weren’t a right fit. No company is going to pass someone off that they want and can bring money to the firm because of the reason they gave you. People lie.... I’ve been told internally a role has been filled when it hasn’t just because I wasn’t a good fit
I know plenty of folks who manage people older than them. They must be not telling you something else...
Out of curiosity, how old are you? I’m at $100K and manage somebody 5 years older than me so i hope I don’t run into this same issue eventually
I’m sure some areas are! Haha I’m with Healthcare but hit me up if you’re interested
I make 100k + and manage folks that are 10 + years older than I am. If this post is true, it really grinds my gears
If you buy that and dont come back with a persuasive argument why they are wrong...they are right.
But wouldn't they know my age before interviewing me?
Recruiters are usually not the brightest and hiring managers don't always notice. But since you said they were going under their own published floor, you were right to walk.
I had a similar experience with EY after a successful interview and them telling me how I’d be a great fit in multiple roles... baffled by their hiring practices.
Are you serious? I'm sad to hear that but I'm glad I'm not alone. Most people on this thread seem to be just as confused as I am about this. How old were you?
I’m actually leaving the firm for another, bigger, more prestigious (lol) big 4 and have had an employment attorney for quite a while now, as advised by seasoned mentors. It is exactly for this reason.
Hell my manager is 15 yrs younger me! More than likely makes the same or a little bit more. And frankly I don't give damn unless they are dumb and don't respect me!
Did they specifically say “age” or moreso level/years of experience? I’d be very surprised if any firm said age - also how would they even know? Even from a resume, if you try to calculate it from the college graduation year it still may not add up because a lot of people take gap years - Unless you listed your HS grad date in which I would remove. Regardless I don’t think 115 is a high ask esp if the position was listed for it. I only have 1.5 years of exp and make 105k in a tier 2 city.
From what I remember they said my experience and qualifications were exactly what they were looking for. Maybe after meeting me in person, they realized I was young? I don't remember them asking for my age but I have been told I look younger. They just told me 110k is what's being offered for this role and the rest of the team would not be happy being my subordinate since I'm younger comparatively. They didn't even have another person that they liked!!
Sorry you had to go through that experience OP, they seem very unreasonable with a lame reason not to hire you. People report to people who appear younger all the time and that shouldn’t matter as long as you have the skills. Sounds like you dodged a bullet! (Assuming you didn’t join that firm)
This doesn't make sense at all for a big 4. We see SMs in 20s managing 40-year old Ms and below all the time
Lol I make 110k at Deloitte at 24. How did they find out your age? I purposely don’t include my graduation year on my resume and avoid answering questions to reveal my age.
In the US age discrimination law applies to 40+. A recent U.K. case, however, ruled in favor of a 21 year old for age discrimination.
