I write product documentation, how-to guides, user guides, and other documentation for non-technical audiences. I get a lot of work from startups that don’t have someone staffed to help with documentation, and I can charge good rates since it’s a small niche so some companies are desperate for help.
A lot of people can’t take technical features and break them down for a non-technical audience, so having that skill has turned into a nice side hustle.
I also edit on the side, sometimes tech documents, sometimes manuscripts, sometimes business proposals. And I have some passive income streams on Etsy and Amazon which pull in a decent monthly profit.
This is awesome. How did you even get started doing this? I've never known anyone who does this.
I am an artist who sells watercolour art, mural services, and art prints! It doesn't make me much money yet, but I am so passionate about it that I love working on it. I spend evenings, weekends, and some slow afternoons doing the work. I don't have as much time for painting as I'd like because I have to spend about 80% of my "art business" time doing business things: expense management, website management, social media, responding to inquiries, planning new projects, following up on invoices, etc. But I still really enjoy all of these tasks. Someday I'd like to spend more time on art. Once I have enough years of work experience, I'd like to take a sabbatical to work on my art business. I am also considering quitting full time work if I could ever get my art business to make a decent amount of money in 5-10 years (obviously not as much as a tech salary, but enough to enjoy my simple lifestyle).
Raising kids is my side hustle. ROI or NPV . . . TBD.
How do people find time for a side hustle? do you multi-task or end up doing long hours? I'm so exhausted by the end of the day that all I have are good intentions. I never get as far as actually starting something extra.

My first side hustle (freelance journalism) would take an extra hour or two 1 to 3 times a month after doing things on weekends I was already doing since it was already my hobby.
With real estate, there’s a bit of work that happens during the buying process, but once things are setup, it only takes a few hours a month max to handle any small issues that come up or communicate with a tenant. Some months, the only work I do is login to my bank account to make sure rent is paid.

Used to do freelance journalism for magazines and websites for one of my hobbies. Now I have rental properties that bring in more income with less work and mostly tax free.
IBM, for the house/apartment complex to cashflow you’ll likely have to look outside the big cities. There are smaller towns where you can cashflow with 5-10% down
I consult on the side for startups and small businesses
Probably at Google but smaller companies don’t have scary legal documents.
For those posting about their side hustles, would you mind sharing how you landed those roles? What industry? What titles? Etc. Anything you can share would be helpful for learning & growth.
I first started building websites for startups then larger businesses simply by talking to people. Now, I’m building a niche offer for real estate agents which includes a website. My approach is more strategic now. I picked a market that is large, easy to find, has purchasing power, and has a pain (still defining that). Then, I built a high end offering $5k/mo and found a customer willing to be scrappy and figure out what generates results. If you’re not as confident, I recommend offering the service for cheaper $500-1000/mo so you have wiggle room to test. Then, you turn that customer into a case study and sell hard using that case study. I’m in the middle of figuring things out now so I can’t tell you for sure if it’s the right approach but I think PMing your side hustle is a decent way. It got me to $60k/yr recurring 🤷🏽♂️
I’m a former UXer so I do UX tutoring for a bootcamp. Also helping a family member with their startup a bit, but no money from that (yet lol)
I'm curious about how you got that gig, I'd love to be a mentor/teacher in any PM bootcamp but couldn't find any that would post part-time jobs or opportunities.
I launched a start up with while at a company. Once we de risked it enough, me and my cofounder quit. Nights and weekend. But honestly I had checked out at work already.
I met him at the company prior to the one I was working for at the time.
Flipping luxury handbags - mainly Chanel because of the value retention (and Hermès if I can find one that I wouldn’t mind investing in).
Where do you get these from and then where do you sell ? What's the business model ?

I consult. Makes only like 10% of my income, but it's up from only 1% the previous year. I'm thinking about creating my own site now too. Right now it's only word of mouth, but I'd like to scale it with more of a digital presence.

Professional networks. They help find me people.
I’ve been offering professional coaching services to make more money. I got a 3.5% raise this year and was told “we don’t account for inflation or market trends and your bonus is very high.” Yes but it’s taxed higher and 3.5% is essentially a paycut now.
Since there is more and more opportunity for professionals to pivot into new careers, I’ve been working with clients on navigating this instead of fighting for equitable pay in a large company.
