I read an article that companies are not hiring as many young people because it's harder to train them from remotely and younger employees aren't getting enough support to advance in their careers. Is that true in your company and will it catch up with and mean it will be harder to get promoted?

If you can’t train or onboard an employee from anywhere, you have a management problem.

Agree with this

Is that not ageism? Either way that’s very lame and those companies will fail imo

like

I don’t think it’s ageism because I think it could be argued it could be applied to any age in entry level roles. So maybe career changers were be older.

Most companies aren't remote, so I don't think this logic checks out. My company has lots of younger employees. Though with the job market so rough, even for low paid, "entry level" positions, there are plenty of candidates who have at least a few years experience, so there's not a lot of incentive for companies to hire folks right out of college with no experience.

Well, I just read it so maybe they are a little behind with their research. I did not realize so many people weren’t remote. It looks like only 22% of workforce is remote now.

I disagree. I see juniors being hired over experienced marketers in the Northwest UK.
There are a few reasons for this:
they're cheaper - lower salaries.
a lot of online filtering (looking at candidates' Linkedin profiles) is being done by PAs, not company directors. PAs tend to be in their 20s.
company leaders don't know the first thing about marketing, so they default to fluffy social media.

It is always harder to train people remotely. However good your processes are, good managers and good teams have watercooler moments and overheard discussions which can be used to teach, clarify and mentor.

No amount of procedure and concious checking in can replace a junior listening to two great colleagues problem solve or replace the moment when someone asks why the junior looks stressed and then explains the thing they've been quietly struggling with but hadn't thought to ask about.

The random conversations about music, pets, how bad that joke was etc also build bonds which make juniors confident to engage and learn from colleagues, and ultimately yes makes it more likely they will be considered to lead projects, meet with clients and ultimately get promoted.

Will people still get promoted? Sure - because marketing needs a constant stream of people rising through the ranks and their work will be good enough and ai will help them solve problems and deliver the same performance as everyone else in the same situation. Will they be brilliant marketers? Probably not.

My company contracts a web developer, we have a set amount of hours for the quarter and pay over if more work is needed.
He never gets anything done. Doesn’t answer emails half the time. The one thing he’s done was take out a blurb that threatened our eligibility for patent renewal.
We have another company taking over in January, but I still have some pretty important dev needs until then and I can’t get him to do a thing. I truly try to give him all he needs.
