I had that same thought a couple years into my career. Later this year, 16 years in, I’m making partner. You can get better.
The best part about being a tax preparer is that it's a portable id. If you find that you are always behind the 8 ball it might just be the firm and not the work. Imposter syndrome can snowball in firms that don't support new preparers. If that's what you are dealing with scout out other firms and look for one that has an internal mentoring approach and not a competitive atmosphere. There are volume preparation firms, which is not good for new preparers and then there are quality first firms where you can get into tax details and learn more. You can take your PTIN and work at either. Sometimes it's not the job but the culture of volume pressure to be as good as the other preparers who've been doing it for 24 years like me. Management that just sees you have a ptin they have a ptin and think it's the same thing are a problem in the industry in my honest opinion. I've managed firms for volume preparation and 9 times out of 10 people quit because their coworkers made the job sound incredibly difficult for new preparers. They do that so you don't take volume away from them because they make more money purely because they do more returns not because they are better than others. Also I do other work on the off season so I don't have to be pressured all year. Just my thoughts for you. Have a good one 👍
Yep. I hear that for sure. Public is very bad
I tend to get overwhelmed by how many ongoing projects I have. What has helped me is writing down my “to dos” whether it’s for the month/week/day or all the above. Sometimes I write it multiple times a day. I also had a manager early on say to me “everything will get done” which is very simple but always helps me refocus.
I would say try changing your team/manager/maybe even company. If you work with larger clients, it may be easier to manage the projects.
Find the path to Tax Partner and follow it. Quickly.
At least you're honest
Give us some more background are you at a small firm mid tier or big four
What niche are you in or is it more core ?
I’ll say this I left fund accounting for tax 🌎 I don’t regret it but if I had to do it over again I’d stay in fund try to get in house somewhere
Not going to lie I don’t think I’d recommend someone get into private client services / Individuals unless they plan on also getting the cfp and kinda going that route
You sound young if you’re really not feeling this it s ok to go try something else hec even audit
Id just if I were you try the big four once before peacing out of public accounting I personally had a much better experience at big four
I am a Tax Associate as well and my CCH WorkStream is like a mile long 🤣 my suggestion is to communicate as much as possible with your reviewers. Ask about the status of projects. Ask them to clearly articulate their needs with each client. Ask for mentorship. Ask for them to follow up on their review notes (especially during slower seasons). You have to take charge of your own development. It is okay to step outside your comfort zone. It is okay to fail. If taxes were easy, we wouldn’t have a job.
