When I got this advice years ago- it really made me angry at first- but then I understood it. Someone said to me “you are used to being the quarterback -making the touchdowns and getting all the praise. Now you are the coach- and it’s important to know that you can’t be both the coach and the quarterback.” (The coach would never send himself onto the field.) Also, we are both female- so this isn’t a guy/football thing. I think it’s a very apt analogy. It helped me a lot.
Definitely something I struggled with at first - it also makes it harder if you were promoted on your same team. I always think of the managers I’ve liked and those that I haven’t and try to emulate their management style. That being said - it’s not always a bad thing to be in the weeds from time to time, as team members work typically reflects on the manager
I’d agree but you also need to know when to be a coach and when to be player. Sometimes you do have to roll up your sleeves with the team—just don’t do their work or it’s pointless. For example, know when to get involved when training and know when to let someone learn from their mistakes to ultimately grow (please, no major, client facing mistakes!).
Everyone here is so pure. I can’t wait to get the hell out of the thankless, hectic executional side.
Agree with the coach and quarterback analogy! I always say to the team that being a supervisor is the hardest role on the team - you’re the “teenager” of our work family. You gotta still be the kid and do the chores sometimes, but you also get to sit at the grown up table and share your opinion and make decisions.
I had the same change happen a few years ago. I try to think of it as the time I used to spend writing and crafting I can now spend teaching--helping younger teams write and craft and learn. I REALLY enjoy it, and different people around the agency have told me they notice I do it and how cool that is (because not everyone takes the time I guess).
Also, funny enough, I find that when I do write things now its mostly ticky tacky things I do to take pressure off other people. Im an SVP type and I wrote some youtube copy the other day. Its kind of fun to be needed in all sorts of ways big and small.
Also (and no offense!) if youre on the digital side, arent you psyched to not do banner grunt work anymore? 😃
