Just go to Seattle it's s great opportunity
This new generation is pretty entitled huh. Has accomplished nothing, still in school, gets an amazing opportunity...want to be remote lol 😆
this has nothing to do with the "new generation", covid has shown us how oppressive workplaces can be by making you come to an office, and how non-essential most office work actually is. most people have been much more productive working remotely.
It's not about entitlement it's about what they are looking to get out of a job, everyone is "entitled" to a decent life no matter where they want to work from. Just cause you had to slave away in an office doesn't mean everyone else has to do it, and it also means that you shouldn't keep your head down and go through it either.
Pro
I turned down Microsoft because they have a policy and didn’t allow remote. Good luck
Ignore the bitter Boomer-comments.
First, check in with the hiring manager if remote is possible.
If not, calculate if relocating works for you money-wise and what else you need to account for.
Second, check in with yourself if you think it's worth it, despite anybody elses opinion.
Microsoft is a corpo and not everyone thrives/enjoys working for them.
There's plenty of remote jobs out there. Take care and enjoy the ride.
Go. Go to Seattle and get Microsoft on yo' dang CV. Do it. "oh no, I'd have to take another semester of college..." DO IT. Go.
Would be a conversation with HR and the hiring manager and I’ve heard that they’re now saying they prefer office based
Just reach out to your recruiter and inform them of it. You should also have a Microsoft business contact as well.
I think for an internship you will have less leverage to negotiate where the internship actually is. A lot of companies like to introduce company culture and do internship specific benefits when you work in person. However, I don’t think it will hurt to ask if they’d be willing to consider making it remote. Let them know that you are grateful for the offer but were expecting to be local/remote and see what they say. You could also ask if they offer relocation assistance for internships. I knew of some internships that did that for summer internships. Be prepared if they says its non negotiable and the internship only works in Seattle. Just a lesson learned to ask during interviews when and where the job occurs to avoid confusion.
Turn down a Microsoft internship in this job market?!? If they couldn’t accommodate my request to telework or relocate, I would suck it up and rent a room/Airbnb. It’s Microsoft!
You’re more than likely gonna lose the internship to someone who will jump to move to Seattle. You’re just an intern, not a FTE so you have very little pull. If you’re ok with possibly losing out on this opportunity, ask about remote. If I were you though, i’d go to Seattle. Microsoft will open up a lot of doors, kid!
I'm 37, I'd take the internship and move my two kids out there.
Inconvenient logistics versus an internship at Microsoft HQ? It’s a no-brainer choice. Go to Seattle.
Microsoft usually offers a stipend for the internship and can hook you up with some rental apartments as well with no lease. Things may be different now. Talk to your recruiter.
This is just one summer and a great opportunity. Don't let it slip through.
I originally applied for a role in another city and didnt have to relocate. My hiring manager agreed I didn't need to be in the office as all of my work could be done remotely. But my role was full time so your mileage may vary.
Go to seattle.
It’s one summer. Go to Seattle.
Before you call this person entitled, remember that many young people don’t have the financial resources to make this work. I know that I wouldn’t have at this point in my life.
If that is the case, I’d be honest with MSFT about this. They might be willing to try and help work things out together.
Yeah and most of these offer relocation benefits. I was at Salesforce prior and SF paid for their interns to fly to San Fran and gave them housing stipends. I'm assuming Msft is similar
Start your professional career off right and tell them.
Depending on the org, I know for a fact that they were flexible with our org’s interns. The interns that came to campus received more perks bc of the offerings and environment. They also made connections by being on campus which will most definitely benefit them in the future. You should go.
Chief
So definitely worth asking what their flexibility is. Its there for certain roles; note I dont know our current policy for interns.
Depending on what other offers you have it may be worth it. My career absolutely launched as an intern who moved to SF passionate about a career in tech. Had I not id be still in boston in a corporate finance gig
OP - on top of CV, pay, and potentially stipend/relo, would encourage you to consider in-person as Interns had a lot of great networking opportunities and fun parties to attend.
The other thing is Seattle area is beautiful in the summer. This is coming from a lifer in the area :) good luck and congrats!
