I regret joining DLA Piper out of law school. I was thrown under the bus on multiple cases, where lies were told that painted me in a horrible light, whether it be that I was mistreating support staff or that I was incompetent. Unless you’re a White male, you will have a hard time fitting in and finding work unless you have a partner mentor who champions you.

I am so sorry about your experience. Already aware DLA has a terrible reputation across the board, but may I ask which office you are in?

likehelpful

A2 not smart to ask. Obv would narrow to like a handful or less ppl.

The amount of people on here either discrediting your experience or telling you this is on par so stop complaining is sickening. I’ve worked at Fortune 500 companies for years before making a leap to attend law school, and law firms are a cesspool in comparison. From how staff is treated to how anyone who isn’t a white cis male is treated.

I also don’t know what due diligence you can truly do. Very few people will be honest to a stranger and the overall law firm’s reputation doesn’t always extend to a specific office and practice group. The only metric that’s been somewhat valid is to see who is in equity partnership at your law firm—if it’s predominately white cis men, it’s a shit show. Issue is, what top law firm doesn’t fit this profile?

I’m here to tell you not to get discouraged. Fine a new place to lateral, and if you ever go in-house, do what you can to give your business to other law firms (and encourage your in-house friends to do the same). I know if I’m ever in-house, I’ll die before giving business to a law firm whose equity partnership isn’t diverse. Tells me all I need to know about what happens behind closed doors.

OP: Thank you for posting this important information. Contact plaintiff side employment attorneys. DM me if you’d like to discuss this all further. I’m also a POC and can validate everything you’re saying.

I’m sorry you’re receiving such unhelpful responses in this thread. I suggest avoiding posting about race and gender in this bowl but instead raising these issues in the affinity bowls (like the Attorneys of Color bowl).

like

I advise interviewing several plaintiff side attorneys, locating one you like, and having their number to call should issues come up in the future. An employment attorney can advise behind the scenes on how to handle a hostile work environment, discriminatory feedback and reviews, retaliation, and the other typical fact patterns that attorneys of color experience at law firms. You don’t have to litigate.

DLA has a partner Matt Schwartz who has been cheering on the genocide in Palestine on LinkedIn for over a year. I would never work there.

likehelpful

When most of your casualties are civil casualties, namely women, kids, doctors, reporters, humanitarian workers…that’s not a war, that’s a genocide. You may say that we don’t have a precise number and that’s true, because Israel doesn’t let independent reporters in, so there is no way for us to corroborate either version of the story.
Now if your argument is that “everyone in Gaza is an actual or potential terrorist”, the joke write itself.

I sense that this firm is extremely fragmented, which lends itself to opportunities for psychopaths to take advantage and exploit particularly vulnerable people, namely junior diverse associates who already are dealing with the stigma of being incompetent and undeserving of their station.

likehelpful

I was aware of this fact and adding more dimension to it…

like

I wait until someone tries to find a cop out and then judge as such. All I want is for my juniors to thrive. It makes my life easier and their lives easier.

OP, nobody really cares. This is on par for biglaw. Next time, do your diligence before choosing among offers. Although I'm guessing since you were at DLA, there weren't many offers for you to choose from. Beggars can't be choosers.

like

Great acoustics work 1

It also seems like some offices are trying to erect an image of elite credentials to make up for perceived inadequacies, including diversity hires. However, this leads to diversity hires being ostracized from day one and never given proper reps to grow into their role, leading to self-fulfilling prophecies.

likehelpful

Yeah that doesn’t answer the question but thanks

like

There is maybe 15% possibility that OP failed because his firm held him back. 85% chance that he is blaming everyone but himself for his inability to succeed.

likefunny

A16, I also commented on this post. Didn't go into too many details since I don't want to identify myself. I'm also POC and used to work there too and experienced similar behavior like OP did. That firm is truly toxic.

like

DLA is just one firm, and there are other better firms (I won’t say much better, I don’t want to lie) out there. As others have alluded to, due diligence is incredibly important so wherever you head to next, I would do everything you can to speak with current POC associates of your class year, to realistically and candidly assess whether an opportunity is right for you.

like

I’d suggest you learn from this experience. Take notes on everything that is happening and gather as mucho information as you can about other people’s views on you. Request further information, that they provide examples, that they are detailed. It’s not that these views necessarily reflective of you or your value, but at least it will help you get self awareness and know where you are standing.
Develop techniques and tactics to navigate this kind of environment.
Maybe you will not grow here, but you make take the knowledge and use it to grow in a different firm.
I’ve been through hell and back in law firms and managed to pull myself together and succeed, you can too.
Less winning and more introspection.
Also, go to therapy, it’s important to get help!

like

Thank you. After substantial introspection, I wish I spoke up more and advocated for myself in real time. I don’t think it would have changed the outcome, but I would have at least felt vindicated.

like

Hi OP, I appreciate you sharing your experience. It’s disappointing to see how some are dismissing your concerns rather than engaging with them in good faith. I also worked at DLA for a time, and while experiences can vary by office and practice group, I found that the firm didn’t do a great job integrating laterals. I ultimately chose to leave because I didn’t feel particularly welcomed, and I also witnessed behavior that raised concerns about inclusivity and professionalism.

likehelpful

I am at least a little skeptical of OP's claims. Tell me one partner or senior associate or group of partners or senior associates are responsible for OP's predicament, and I could see a claim of racism. But if this happens across multiple cases and across multiple partners and groups, then OP's claim of racism becomes suspect in my eyes.

like

A16. Agreed.

like

Highly suspect. Why would so many people be out to get an associate? Multiple lies told about this person’s treatment of staff and quality of work? Maybe OP just isn’t very nice or good at their job.

I posted this somewhere else before I remembered that I am in this bowl :) so, I changed jobs 6-7 months ago and I am realizing it is not a good fit. I have a partner who routinely ignores emails or responds to them several weeks later. He has to approve every single document sent to the client or the court, which means you have a physically go to his office to ask him to review something. Half of the time you go to meet with him in person, he’s either on a call or otherwise busy. I find that this basically creates more work and makes meeting deadlines extremely difficult. Is this normal?
