The good thing is that they’re not paying $200,000 for an MBA and then getting paid $80k.
The issue here, I’d assume, is they’re not going to target universities. University of Western South Dakota isn’t going to pay $150,000 like Wharton, UC Berkeley, Columbia, USC, etc.
Use your veteran status, journey, and story to get into a top MBA program. And get those big $$$.
136k no MBA. I don’t know how my pay gap will expand long term. But right now, not too bad.
Part timers fit in the same if you are doing on campus recruiting. At least pre covid.
Ultimately, have a good story.
For those talking about top 20 schools:
If you have competitive rankings on evals/fitreps, put them on your resume (#1/44). Doesn’t hurt you to not put it on but if you’re breaking out it helps.
M7 schools know the general path typically so if you stray far away from it to make you look very off track, explain it. By this I mean they will look for progression to key positions like company command for the army and marine corps, etc. They will not know the nuances of a niche field. Don’t try to plus up your resume too much because if you have a military reader, it’ll tank you. Assistant S3 is not the equivalent of a COO.
Try and shoot for a 700+ if you can. This will get your serious consideration for a top 10, although you can get in to an M7 without it (although not likely with a 650 unless you have a super unique background)
Start early and remember that those collateral duties you do can be used to fill extracurricular blocks, although having an actual extra curricular in a leadership position (treasurer of a club, etc) helps a lot.
$143k base. US Navy vet.
Thanks. Very helpful
An MBA from Walden University will get you an 80k undergrad-level position... if you are lucky. The vets with top 20 MBAs from target schools come in at the typical 150k-ish salary. It’s all about the school regardless of veteran status.
Yup. And a veteran with decent work experience and who can craft a good story can easily get into a top 20 program. Easily.
If it’s any consolation, I make more than that and I don’t even have a bachelors. 😂
I just have a very specific skill that is needed in every command that deals with Special Security.
Ok ‘Taken’. I see you.
Unless you’re going military->undergrad->MBA, not entirely sure why you’d spend the time for an MBA to land at $150k.
If you’re coming to consulting straight from the military, you’re probably around or a bit over 100k, with a 2-3 year track to $150+. So, assuming a 2-year MBA program, you’re spending $150-200k and losing another $200k in earning potential to accelerate your earnings growth by a few months, probably 2 years at most.
Potentially better to spend those two years in a consultancy, learning your craft and building earnings. Even better if you can find your way to a sponsored part time or executive program with your firm.
This all assumes, of course, that you have some skills and qualities that will allow you to keep a reasonably high trajectory upon landing at a firm, but that’s something you’ll have to assess for yourself. Also, that your firm is structured for upward mobility. Some firms (unfortunately Accenture among them imo), have a tendency to allow vet hires to languish in lower level roles for years without reasonable growth opportunities.
Going for EMBA myself, but my comp right now is half what yours was and I’m self sponsored financially. :-/
Graduating next year from top 20 part time MBA. Hoping for that 150k+ salary 🙁
Well feel like when you say top 20 you mean bottom of the top 20 since you would say top 15 if it were ranked higher. Also don’t know what ranking you’re using which throws more uncertainty. Lastly it’s part time which knocks it down another step. Mediocre may not be the right word tho. IMO I wouldn’t see a difference between someone who graduated PT from Michigan state vs PT NYU
^interesting point. Where do part time Top 20s fit into this?
I went to a top 30 MBA. Very recognizable school. I'm at 95k (in tier 3 city). Was it worth it....I'm still not sure.
No kidding. But who defines them...
Well, if you come from an enlisted background an MBA is a huge leg up
