All of my weeks since summer have been at least 50 too. Definitely taking a toll on my life.

Yeah I was in a meeting with an SM a few weeks back pretty much commanding managers to have the teams work 50 hours. On the positive, managers were defending their teams saying it’s not sustainable and will lead to more turnover.

It is until they can convince enough people to go into public. Last year “broke” a lot of people last year and PA firms will have a challenging time convincing people to work for them. Now is the time to evaluate if your firm has the right strategy moving forward from everything that happened last year. I left my old firm because they were not willing to bring my pay rate to market and they didn’t let me work from home permanently. This may sound like this is only a personal preference, but people left even before I left over below market pay and not giving people options with the current working conditions. I left to a firm that gave me what I was looking for and now my old coworkers are stretched even more. Good luck and I hope things get better!

I’ve averaged 70 hours a week since July last year. That includes a couple of 40 hour weeks for vacation and Christmas break. Send help!

Reminder to everyone: use your 2021 vacation time. Don’t let it pass you by just because you’re not traveling. Take a long weekend once a month to nap and eat chips in sweat pants all day. We all need to do our part to normalize self care, and sitting at home doing “nothing” is just as worthy of a vacation day as pina coladas on the beach.

The culture around PTO on my 6-7 person team is one where: 1) no one (besides me) takes more than 1-2 days off a year, 2) people frequently brag about how little time off they take…”I only took one day off for my child being born”, 3) people make comments that I’m “always on vacation” (in the last 2.5 years working at my company, I’ve taken cumulatively ~4 weeks off). Team workflow is deal-based so it’s difficult to plan in advance for taking time off as deals often come up unexpectedly. Cont…

Advice needed. I HATE billable hours but recruiters are clamoring to have me apply to open positions in my field at larger firms. I'm at a boutique firm in CA now (real estate, municipal law) and have been here about one year. 7th year attorney. Do I pursue these options? I also have two interviews to work for government agencies (no billable hours). Also would be open to in-house counsel roles. Right now my billable hr target is very fair, compensation is decent, work is decent. Thanks.
