Why were you laid off from Square? I think that dictates much of the decision.
Assuming you were laid off for typical reorg/changing business conditions reasons, I'd include it. That's very explainable, and most people won't bat an eye.
Then your story track is basically:
Strong track record of performance at PwC --> Leads to a new role at Square doing X --> Laid off for [insert reason that has nothing to do with your performance] --> Back to PwC with more strong performance --> Now I'm back on the market looking for the next opportunity, because I want to make an impact outside of consulting
I think that talk track is more common than you might think, and people will understand, particularly in this climate when so many talented people are being let go for all kinds of reasons that have nothing to do with their personal performance.
I'd second that recommendation! Even if you boomeranged back at the same level, it means you were doing really well at PwC. They chose to rehire you over what was likely thousands of other options. Use that fact to your advantage.
if i were you, i would mention square. it's a matter of telling the right story (framing it to be more positive) during the interview
You could convey it with a story as why you went to square, learned quite a bit but it wasn’t what you thought / wrong fit and you came back to PwC and are now have a better idea of what it is you’re looking to do as a career path etc. all depends on how long you’ve been at PwC once you boomeranged. Story wouldn’t be great if it’s only been a few months and you’re looking to leave again. In this case, you need to form a story of why you think you will be a good fit and stay at this new place OR you can be honest and talk through your layoff (why it happened - companies understand economical issues). At the end the company you’re going to wants to understand your journey and what got you there
You can't remove Square from your resume - it will show up on all of your future background checks then it will be a red flag that you tried to hide that period on your resume.
