I love an easy going manager.
Right. They make coming to work less stressful and allow you to do your best work.
"player/coach" is very popular with employers because the trend is towards smaller teams with the expectations that managers and leaders will be more hands on, in the work. Not saying I agree with that as a business practice, but in terms of marketing one self it's a safe bet IMO. Yes, it's technically two words. If one is truly needed I'd go with "adaptable".
I think you’re ok if you back it up with how you are performance driven but harbor a culture of creativity and empathy within your team. It’s probably what you meant but it shows that you give your team space to grow but still understand the focus of where your team needs to be going
I did back it up with an explanation, and when I said it, I even prefaced it with, "this sounds simplistic, but..." and explained why I think that's so important and to avoid being a micromanager.
That's a dumb question if that carried a lot of weight and easy going is not the right answer. Like who wants a toxic whiplashing boss
very true! I've had some nightmare bosses, as we all have.
Following up here - I got the job. I guess they like "easy going" managers. Whew.
Congratulations! Love to see people win who make work easier for others.
Instead of easy-going, I would lean into adaptable if you're invited to the next round because that is what an easy-going manager is to their team.
Good news - they said I'm a finalist for the job, so my "easy-going" one-word description didn't count against me.
🙌
Now I’m imagining what I might say. Maybe “personal?” As in my “style” adapts to the needs of the person I’m managing. I have direct reports at every level from midlevel copywriter to Creative Director. I’m necessarily more hands on at the execution level with my copywriter and my conversations with my CD report are higher level, business unit convos.
It's so easy to overthink, but try not to! You don't know what resonates and you are reacting in real time. If it really bothers you, clarify briefly in your thank you email.
