3-5 years just means they want you to have some kind of production experience. Maybe a bit of skill at presenting. It’s not like you’re going for a senior title...if your book is alright, you’ll be fine. Definitely keep an open mind about junior titles though. A good portfolio will open more doors for you than a mid level title.
Here we see the disadvantage to today's young folks wanting to accelerate their title promotions, and to agencies giving out titles instead of raises. Yes you should just call yourself a jr. Sorry your agency did that to you. (Giving you the benefit of the doubt that it wasnt your idea)
I agree with you that this situation does create a disadvantage. But I actually applied for the Art Director position at another agency and got the job and was planning on staying there a while because I was able to be really hands on and take ownership of my work. Unfortunately due to the loss of a client, they had to let most of the creative team go and now I’m stuck in this situation.
• Put yourself out there as an Art Director.
• Evaluate yourself against the job requirements.
• If you feel confident in your abilities then disregard the amount of time you have sat in the Art Director position.
If you answer confidently and intelligently that is really all you need to sell yourself. Beyond that it usually comes down to price and you may have an edge there.
Any job worth taking should scare you a little.
jobs posted are wanting between 3-5 years experience. I currently have a little over 1.5 years experience. Should I be considering Jr. Art Director positions or would that look bad going backwards in title? It’s hard because I need to find a new job ASAP, but want to make sure I’m still on the right career path and not taking a salary cut.
