I mean, they certainly didn't set you up for confidence. But also, maybe they feel a little bit burned based on what happened with the former employee. I wouldn't read into it too much because a remote position is awesome. I might ask why they were fired and see what they say, maybe it was something completely avoidable.
I don’t think you’re wrong for feeling that way. First impressions matter, and leading with “if you get terminated…” instead of how they support new hires or set people up to succeed would throw me off too. It might not mean the place is bad, but it does suggest they’re still reacting to whatever happened with the last person or that communication isn’t their strong suit. That alone can affect how safe or confident you feel starting a new role. I’d trust the feeling enough to ask a few direct questions about expectations, training, and how they measure success. The way they answer will tell you a lot.
