That doesn't make sense unless IBM doesn't pay for employees' vacation. I'm not sure I understand the logic. Are they asking people to take unpaid vacations?
And, given COVID-19, where do they expect everyone to go?
Although I think Montana is still fairly inoculated. :)
But what if a company is private? Does unused PTO have the same affect??

I rode the bench for 6 months at IBM during the recession in ‘09 and they made the same request then too. Not only is it a perfectly reasonable request to make, it’s also their classically-subtle way of telling you not to expect that you can ride the pine all the way through the summer, and then turn around and decide to take a 2 vacation in July just as work starts heating back up.
This went to everyone, not the bench

Who died and let the CFO in charge over there?
Sheeeesh.

VP1-what?
Yes 🙄
Yes. It was brought up in our department meeting last week and infuriated me. I’ve been a bit slow on work. They’ve suggested billing towards menial tasks (security training and “filing emails” whatever that means) and there’s a job code for “if you really truly have nothing to do” Followed by “but hey! Here’s an idea! If you know you’re light on work, take time off! We all understand how important mental health is and no one will judge you for using PTO.”
I WOULD JUDGE ME

So does that mean when things return to “normal” you have less vacation days to use?
I worked for IBM for a year. Worse period of my life, not been dramatic
Started like this. Quickly switched to help the cash flow situation and welcome to furlough.
Same here. Our leadership is requesting 40 hrs be taken in q2 if benched.
What office are you out of? I am in Dallas and have not heard this. TC. Staffed
Damn that’s bull
WLB there for ya. Even without coronavirus, this is always the practice
My wife's company is allowing them to request a pay out for their unused paid time off! I would love this and cash in big > 10k.
