I’d like to get your thoughts on managers making less than staff. Some background, I was a staff nurse, then became charge and am now recently promoted to clinical manager. I have 8.5 years nursing experience and there is staff with many more years. I recently found out they are making more than me, about $23,000 annual more. This has been bothering me as I stepped up to take on more responsibility and I’m a very good nurse. Is this normal for middle management?

This is very common and expected. Nurses and other specialist have a high demand and are of low supply. So naturally their pay is high to be competitive.

like

Ahh didn’t realize that part. They are definitely taking advantage of your skills. I’d suggest asking for a raise or find a new company.

Not unusual to have some highly experienced staff making more than you. Especially since they can cash in on special pay, diffs, overtime, etc. But if you have concerns or feel frustrated, you should express it. If you’re not comfortable having that conversation, well, that’s another issue altogether. Good luck. You’ve got one of the hardest and arguably the most important job there is.

like

That would be good timing.

Have you been at the same place all this time? Did you negotiate the salary going into the new position? I always thought management and people higher up than me automatically made more because they still have the nursing knowledge, but have more responsibilities. Makes me afraid to move up if I'll just be making less.

like

I’ve been there for four years. Started as staff, then relief charge, now clinical manager. I did negotiate. They said 10% increase I got about 13%. Still put me a lot lower than nurses who have maxed out

Happens all the time. When someone is salaried instead of hourly.

like

I’m not talking OT or differentials. I’m making more than I was at the bedside but it’s still less than the top of the RN scale

like

Yes, this is normal. Staff nurses are more essential than managers, and in fact they are frequently cutting jobs from the top in the nursing world. No more nurse educators, removed Nursing Directors and Unit Managers from individual units to have just one oversee multiple units. Safest way to keep your job is to stay at the bedside.

This is normal at my hospital. Are RNs unionized? Nurse managers are considered unclassified staff at my hospital so they are not on the same pay scale as a staff nurse.

This is a non-union hospital.

Maybe it’s just a lack of guidance/uniformity in the US. I’m not sure if I feel this way because it is simply the nature of the work or because I’m just not capable.
